Camden lineman Stevens commits to Maine

Camden senior Andrew Stevens didn't play football until his freshman year.

On Sunday, he committed to attend the University of Maine on a football scholarship.

"It's exciting because I know how hard I've worked to make this happen," Stevens said. "It's like all my hard work has paid off."

Stevens said he made his decision Sunday morning after returning home from a weekend visit to Maine.

"I liked the environment," Stevens said. "They treat you great. I'm excited to learn more about football and continue to improve."

Camden coach Dwayne Savage said Stevens' development as a student athlete has been the result of his diligence.

"Problems are not a sign of failure but an opportunity for growth - that's Andrew," Savage said. "He started playing football and wrestling four years ago and now he excels in both and has maintained a 3.5 [grade point average] or better the last two years.

"When he sets a goal, he makes it happen."

The 6-foot-3, 280-pound Stevens was recruited as a defensive lineman. He led Camden to a 10-1 record and the West Jersey Football League Royal Division title last season, registering 79 tackles with 10 sacks.

"That's what I love, playing defense," Stevens said.

Stevens also is a standout wrestler with a 15-0 record in the 285-pound weight class.

Maine is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association with Villanova, Delaware, Towson, and William & Mary, among other programs.

Maine won the CAA last season with a 7-1 record and was 10-3 overall.

"It's great football," Stevens said.
