Sat. Pa. boys and girls: Chester remains unbeaten

In 2010, Delaware power Sanford provided the lone blemish on Chester's otherwise perfect boys' basketball season.

Saturday afternoon, at the PA/DE Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge hosted by Cheltenham, the Warriors were eight minutes away from downing the unbeaten Clippers again.

But thanks to fourth-quarter heroics by Mahir Johnson and Tyrell Sturdivant, Chester rallied and edged Sanford, 69-64.

The Clippers (4-0) entered the final period down by 50-44, but opened with 10 straight points and did not trail again.

Johnson scored nine of his game-high 20 points and Sturdivant had eight of his 16 in the final quarter.

Sturdivant added 12 rebounds, and Khaleeq Campbell recorded four steals.

Also at Cheltenham:

Neumann-Goretti defeated St. Andrew's (Del.), 59-49. Ja'Quan Newton led the Saints with 14 points, and Tony Toplyn had five blocks.

Archbishop Carroll used a 25-point third quarter to pull away from Salesianum and cruise to a 59-35 victory. Ernest Aflakpui paired 11 points with 11 rebounds, and Derrick Jones added eight rebounds, three blocks, and a team-high 13 points.

Ahmad Gilbert compiled 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Constitution over Howard Tech, 56-42.

Nonleague. Anthony Wright-Downing broke Sankofa Freedom's single-game scoring record, pouring in 43 points in the Warriors' 83-28 home victory over City Center. Wright-Downing, a senior guard, also grabbed 10 rebounds, and classmate Ra'Shawn Ladson dished out 15 assists.

St. Joseph's Prep turned away Roxborough, 73-30, at home. Chris Clover led all players with 20 points and added eight rebounds.

Jamir Coleman scored 11 of his 23 points in the third quarter to help Father Judge past visiting Pope John Paul II, 56-34.

Bryce Allen netted 20 points in the Hill School's 60-47 victory at Haverford School.

Bristol raced to a 42-point halftime lead en route to a 70-19 home win over George School. Chad Palmer had 13 points to lead eight Bristol scorers.

At Interboro, the host Buccaneers defeated Gospel of Grace, 62-56, behind 22 points from Christian Irons. Gospel of Grace's Eric Williams had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Georgios Papagiannis piled up 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks, but Westtown fell just short against visiting Benedictine (Va.), 49-48.

Bryce Garrett dished out 10 assists, but it was the two free throws she hit with five seconds remaining that proved to be the difference in Bartram's 36-34 victory over visiting Lincoln in the Public League.

Bartram's Sydney Barrow led all players with 14 points. Tyshell Jessie scored a team-high 12 for Lincoln.

Elsewhere in the Public League, Bianca Dunn dropped in 28 points in Math, Civics and Sciences' 50-18 triumph over visiting Motivation.

Nonleague. Indiah Cauley (14 points, 13 rebounds) helped Penn Wood roll at Haverford High, 54-26.
