Rancocas Valley advances in field hockey playoffs

After waiting an entire month to win a regular-season game, the Rancocas Valley field hockey team had to wait a few extra periods to win its second playoff game on Monday afternoon.

The sixth-seeded Red Devils won on strokes, 3-1, in a Central Jersey Group 4 quarterfinal at No. 3 Jackson that stood scoreless after two overtimes.

Jackson led, 1-0, after the first round of strokes., then Mal Rickerhauser made a stop and Kailey McCloskey flipped a goal into the upper left corner to tie it.

Rickerhauser followed with another save and Paige Davis faked the goalie out before scoring left to make it 2-1.

After Jackson's fourth shooter missed wide, Kay Lawrence's shot ricocheted off the inner left post and into the cage for the win.

"It was awesome," RV coach Julie Thornton said. "I have no voice."

Rancocas Valley, which returned just four starters, has won eight times since exiting September with an 0-7-2 record.

No. 5 Lenape 1, No. 4 Toms River North 0: Jenna Priore set up Alexa Colfer in overtime to win it for the visiting Indians.

S.J. Group 4 Quarterfinals

Kaitlyn Hatch scored twice for No. 6 Washington Township which triumphed, 3-1, at No. 2 Clearview.

No. 1 Eastern 11, No. 8 Cherokee 0: Karlee Spirit led the charge for the Vikings at home, notching three goals.
