Glassboro's Pendleton wins two at Buena

Glassboro senior Asia Pendleton received a crash course in time management Saturday, the second day of the South Jersey sectional track and field championships at Buena.

Pendleton, who competes in four events, will have to juggle even more this week when she vies for four state titles, all before she attends the prom.

"Next week is going to be hectic, but now I'm prepared for it," she said Saturday.

Pendleton won two events in Group 1 over the weekend, and placed second in two. Her first places, in the long jump and high hurdles, came Saturday.

"I've got to get used to things like this," Pendleton said. "I can't complain - just have to do what I have to do."

Haddonfield girls take Group 2. The Group 2 girls' events were dominated by Haddonfield, with at least six individuals placing in the top three in their events. The Bulldogs won the sectional title by almost 60 points.

Freshman Carly Bonnet placed second in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 21.80 seconds, and teammate Lauren Roberts took fourth place.

"It is really cool because Lauren and I always get to run together, train together, and help each other out," Bonnet said. "I think that is the most important thing because I'm not in it by myself. I get to run with someone else."

Sophomore Shelby Cain and junior Megan Malloy placed first and second in the 3,200, and senior Katie Johnson won the shot put.

Other top finishers for Haddonfield were senior Erica Herrmann, second in the high jump; junior Olivia Blaber, third in the 100 hurdles; and junior Emily Carson, second in the long jump and third in the 200.

"We have a lot of girls spread out throughout the events, and we are a strong team overall," Malloy said. "We always have the team goal motivating everybody."

Kirschling, Willingboro boys shine. West Deptford junior Megan Kirschling took first place in the Group 2 high jump, with a 5-foot, 8-inch effort. The jump was a sectional record and six inches better than the closest competitor's. Less than 20 minutes later, Kirschling placed second in the 100 hurdles.

"It's an advantage for me because I need to be doing stuff to stay warmed up and loose," Kirschling said of the lack of time between events. "It actually works to my advantage. I just have to do hurdle drills before I go over there.

"It felt like a great day," she added.

On the boys' side, seniors Isaac Williams and Marlon Bryan took first and second place in the 110 hurdles for Willingboro. Williams' time of 14.16 seconds won by a full second.

"Knowing he is in front of me keeps me motivated and also pushes me, too," Bryan said.

"I just try to get to the next hurdle faster, focus on the next hurdle, and take it one hurdle at a time," Williams said.

Williams also won the 200 (22:38). Together, Williams and Bryan helped Willingboro win the Group 2 title.

Four for Averett. Anthony Averett, a Woodbury junior, won four events, including three Friday. He knew he could contend in all four but was surprised by his 22.66-second time in the 200.

"I'm trying to win all four," Averett said of next weekend's state championships. "I still have a whole week to prepare."

Other notable sectional titles went to Bridgeton junior Braheme Days Jr. in the discus and Haddon Heights freshman Dominique Irons in the Group 1 triple jump. In Group 1, Penns Grove won the girls' title, and Haddon Township took the boys'.
