Luis Ortiz and Andre Butts produced crucial about-face efforts and sparked Northeast to the Public League wrestling championship on Wednesday night with a 33-28 win at Central.
The third-seeded Vikings (15-15), who lost a league regular-season meeting with top-seeded Central by 46-25 on Dec. 21, won four of the last six weights to rally from a 22-18 deficit. Jamal Powell clinched the upset with a 15-3 major decision over James Salas at 160 pounds.
"Jamal jumped out, took a 5-0 lead and kept the pressure on the whole match," Northeast coach Mike Siravo said. "Being the No. 3 seed motivated the kids. They were determined to do well in the playoffs."
Ortiz and Butts were pinned in the regular-season meeting with the Lancers (9-12), but Ortiz scored a 3-minute pin at 195 and Butts added a 5-2 decision at 126 to help reverse the outcome.
Northeast, which will face Catholic League champ La Salle for the District 12 Class AAA title on Friday, also received pins from Kemran Sayikov (170 pounds) and Joe Bruno (106), and a 15-0 technical fall from Neil Mustafa (145).
Suburban One. Central Bucks South clinched at least a share of the Continental Conference championship by subduing visiting Hatboro-Horsham, 50-18. The Titans (13-3 overall, 6-0 conference) hold a one-game lead with a match against Pennridge remaining on Feb. 8.
South dominated the upper weights, winning six bouts in a row from 152 pounds to 220, including pins by Dylan Swan (160), Dominic Rigous (170), William Muzicka (182), and Greg Frasch (195).
Ches-Mont. Heavyweight Dean Lang started Great Valley's 57-12 win over visiting Sun Valley with a 48-second pin, and the Patriots later added falls by John Dodson (120) and Steven LaBrage (160).
Pioneer Athletic. Upper Perkiomen received four pins in a row from Wolfgang McStravick (138), Trevor Weeks (145), Ray Young (152) and Daron Pijanowski (160) en route to a 57-14 romp over visiting Pottsgrove.
Boyertown's Chase Garber pinned Perkiomen Valley's Chris Kline with 1 second left in their 182-pound bout, wrapping up the host Bears' 60-13 win on Senior Night.
Del-Val. Glen Mills' 55-6 victory at Penn Wood included Kyle Lackford's 29-second pin at 145 pounds and Tyler Taylor's 16-2 decision at 152.
Nonleague. Zaid Walter's third-period pin at 113 pounds steered George School to a 42-30 win over visiting Plumstead Christian.
Consecutive 32-second pins by Alex Kluko (145) and Dontae Johnson (152) highlighted Church Farm's 64-9 triumph over visiting Bristol.
Boys' Basketball
Tim Abruzzo got hot from long range, drilling seven three-point baskets in a 30-point performance that carried Pennridge past visiting Upper Perkiomen, 82-45, in nonleague action.
Josh Heyliger scored 10 of his 19 points in the second quarter, and Hill School nailed eight three-pointers in a 74-49 triumph over visiting Phelps.
Hank Goldenberg posted 12 points and 7 assists, and Gilman Myran netted 11 points in a 17-5 second quarter that put Germantown Friends ahead to stay in a 61-51 win at Valley Forge.
Communications Tech claimed a 48-38 win at Lincoln as Tony Parker hauled in 10 rebounds and also scored 7 of his 13 points in a 20-4 second-quarter surge.
Jay Hardy collected 23 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for Swenson in a 63-43 win over visiting Palumbo.
Girls' Basketball
Solebury School built a 25-2 halftime advantage and sailed past visiting Villa Victoria, 45-10, in the quarterfinals of the Penn-Jersey League playoffs. Freshman Tess Richardson led the Spartans with 13 points, and Bria Wilkins grabbed 12 rebounds.
Mercy Vocational also advanced, with a 33-29 win over visiting Doane Academy in which Linette Young netted 12 points.
Catholic. Sarah Curran led Archbishop Carroll in scoring (14) and rebounding (13) during a 47-31 win at Lansdale Catholic.
Public. Mastery Charter spotted host Mariana Bracetti a 20-9 halftime lead before Stephanie Reed (17) ignited a comeback for a 41-31 win.
Bicentennial. Kievanna Lacey (13) had 7 points in a 17-9 first quarter that propelled Morrisville past host Phil-Mont Christian, 59-28. Christopher Dock's Olivia Bradford outscored visiting MaST Charter by tossing in 23 points in the Pioneers' 52-20 win.
