Sat. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: CHA's Wilson defends championship

Chestnut Hill Academy's Dustin Wilson covered a sloppy Belmont Plateau cross-country course in 16 minutes, 14 seconds on Saturday and successfully defended his individual title at the 27th annual Pennsylvania Independent Schools Championships.

Wilson won by a margin of 1:09 over Germantown Academy's Ben Ritz.

Germantown Friends swept the team trophies, edging Germantown Academy by seven points in the boys' race, and Notre Dame by the same margin in the girls' competition.

Notre Dame's Maria Seykora led the girls' race with a time of 19:52.

Girls' Tennis

The four District 1 girls' tennis teams competing in the final day of the PIAA state team tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club ran into powerful opponents in the semifinals and failed to reach the championship round.

Defending state Class AAA champion Shady Side Academy got past District 1 runnerup Wissahickon, 3-2, in the semifinals.

Wissahickon got wins from Danielle Mustin at third singles, and from the second-doubles team of Nora Landells and Christie Cesarini, but Shady Side captured key three-set comeback wins at first singles and first doubles.

District 1 champ West Chester Henderson (20-1) suffered its first loss, 4-0, to Peters Township. The first singles match was not completed, and Peters Township won the other matches in straight sets.

State Class AA. Both District 1 teams were eliminated in the morning semifinals.

Seven-time defending state champion Harriton dropped a 4-0 verdict to District 7's Sewickley Academy. The first-singles match was not completed, and the only match to go three sets came at first doubles where the Rams' Renee Simms and Jen White were beaten, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Wyomissing of District 3 defeated Lower Moreland, 3-2, by sweeping both doubles matches and winning at first singles. The Lions' Arianne Polatnick won at second singles, 6-3, 6-2, and the third-singles match was conceded to Jessie Hyman.
