Fri. Pa. girls' roundup: Gerlach triumphs in cross-country

Tori Gerlach didn't have much cushion as she edged Meghan McGovern for first place at the District 1 girls' Class AAA cross-country championship meet at Lehigh University on Friday.

Pennridge's Gerlach finished in 17 minutes, 39 seconds, just five seconds ahead of North Penn's McGovern. Hannah Grossman of Strath Haven finished in third at 17:46.

Pennsbury captured the team title with 69 points.

Team champion Pennsbury and the next top four teams will join the top 25 runners not on those teams advance to Nov. 5's State Championship meet at Hershey.

In the Class AA championship meet, Megan McGarrity raced to a first-place finish. Team champion St. Basil advanced to the state meet along with the top five runners not from St. Basil.

District 12. West Catholic's Jazmin Booker cruised to a first-place finish in the Class AA championship meet.

Booker finished the course at Belmont Plateu in 19:46, 50 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Paul Robeson captured the team title.

In the Class AAA Championship, Teresa Ortiz of St. Hubert finished in 19:29 for first place and Archbishop Wood captured the team title.

The top two teams in both Class AAA and AA, along with the top 10 runners in each class not from those teams, qualify for the state meet.


Field Hockey

Anna Studenmund scored in overtime and Springfield (Montco) downed New Hope-Solebury, 2-1, at Upper Dublin in the quarterfinal of the District 1 Class AA Playoffs. The senior scored off an assist by junior Libby Field, who early scored an unassisted goal. Kim Machalette added three saves for the Spartans.


Class AAA. Brielle Hartzell scored a hattrick and host Unionville downed Perkiomen Valley, 4-1, in a District 1 quarterfinal.

Brook Sabia scored the game-winner with 11:25 leftin regulation and host Mount St. Joseph downed Spring-Ford, 2-1, in a District 1 quarterfinal.

Heather Morris lifted Owen J. Roberts to a 3-2 win at Wissahickon with an overtime goal.

Tri-County. Jackie Sell scored twice and Perkiomen School downed Kimberton Waldorf, 3-0, at West-Mont Christian for the league title.



West Chester Henderson and Wissahickon easily advanced to the Class AAA State semifinals.

Henderson downed Holidaysburg, 5-0, at the Hershey Racquet Club behind the strong play of Corrine Fleet. The Warriors advance to meet Peters Township in Saturday's semifinal.

Wissahickon knocked off Manheim Township, 4-1. Juniors Kathleen Fuh and Darcy Horn rallied for a win at second doublesafter dropping the first game.

The championship will be held on Saturday following the semifinals.

Class AA. Both Lower Moreland and Harriton won Friday to advance to Saturday's state semifinals.

Lower Moreland knocked off Jersey Shore, 5-0, behind strong play at singles by Madison Cohen and Arianne Polatnick. Both seniors won their matches with ease, 6-0, 6-0. The Lions finished in second place in District 1 Class AA.

District 1 AA's first-place team, Harriton, edged Mercyhurst Prep, 3-2. Hannah Drayton, District 1 AA's top singles player, rallied to win, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, at first singles.

In the semifinals, Lower Moreland will meet Wyomissing from District 3 while Harriton faces Sewickley Academy of District 7.

The state championship match will also be held on Saturday after the semifinals.



Agnes Irwin and visiting Notre Dame showed plenty of offense as they played to a 4-4 tie in an Inter-Ac match. Agnes Irwin's Liz Spitz tied the game with just 2 minutes left and Marin Bloise added two goals for the Owls.

Also in the Inter-Ac, Kelsey Chapman scored a career-high four goals and Springside breezed past host Penn Charter, 5-1.



Masterman captured the Public League Class AA title as it knocked off Saul, 3-0.

Northeast captured the Class AAA title and will meet Masterman at Lincoln for the league title on Wednesday.
