Sat. S.J. boys’ and girls’ roundup: Kingsway romps in playoff opener

Kingsway goalie Steve Killian came through with 24 saves, and the 13th-seeded Dragons provided plenty of offensive support in scorching No. 20 seed Morris Knolls, 15-1, on Saturday in a NJSIAA State Group 3 boys' lacrosse opening-round match.

Mike Moran led the attack with four goals and two assists, Sam Trill had a hat trick and set up three goals, and Troy Gentile and Tim Kemner combined for four goals and three assists.

Kingsway (11-7) will head to No. 4 seed Mount Olive for a second-round game on Tuesday.

State Group 1. Matthew Porter scored five times and assisted on four goals as No. 14 seed Haddonfield hammered 19th-seeded Kittatinny, 18-8, in a first-round match.

Gunnar Apgar and Greg Halla added four goals apiece and Mike Walker notched a hat trick for the Bulldogs.

Nonleague. A furious fourth-quarter rally wasn't enough for Shawnee to overcome a slow start, as the Renegades fell, 14-10, at Montgomery.

Cody Brown improved to 8-0 and tied the Gloucester Catholic career record with his 22d win, as the Rams ran over Paul VI, 12-2, in a Diamond Classic quarterfinal played at Washington Township.

Brown, who had a double and a home run in a 14-hit attack, now sits atop the school's all-time victory list alongside Greg Burke, who established the mark in 2001.

In another Diamond Classic quarterfinal, Anthony Lopez backed Sawyer Brown's two-hit pitching by going 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored, as Buena blasted Holy Spirit, 9-1.

Burlington County. Jeff Singer struck out eight and walked three in pitching a no-hitter, as host Holy Cross cruised past Bordentown, 10-0, in six innings.

Kevin McMenamin doubled twice and drove in five runs to help visiting Maple Shade outslug New Egypt, 10-7.

Tri-County. Delsea swept a doubleheader from Wildwood, 12-1 and 12-2, Nick Freijomil tossing a two-hitter in the opener and batting 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap.

Ronnie Metzger's two-run home run ignited a six-run sixth inning that allowed host Clayton to put away Schalick, 7-0.

Connor Flynn singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs to highlight Kingsway's 12-2 home win over Penns Grove. Starter and winner Zach Bradian combined with Nick Listro on a three-hitter.

Vocational Tournament. Sophomores Zach Funk and Chris Gilchrist combined for two hits, two runs, two stolen bases and two RBIs to make host GCIT a 3-1 winner over Pennsauken Tech.

Nonleague. Vince Corbi's grand slam was followed by a solo home run by Ed Royds and Connor Arsenault's two-run double, as Shawnee scored seven times in the seventh for a 9-7 come-from-behind victory at Hopewell Valley.

Reliever Holvin Figueroa ended a second-and-third, two-out jam in the seventh by striking out the final batter, preserving Sacred Heart's 6-4 victory at Pennsville. Winning pitcher Chris Bell belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Host Williamstown rallied late to upend Kingsway, 3-2, and clinch at least a tie for the Tri-County Conference Royal Division crown.

The Braves picked up four of their seven hits in the game-turning sixth inning, with all four going for extra bases. Amanda Martinez began the comeback with a home run, winning pitcher Tiarra Sanabria followed with a double and scored on Shannon Grim's triple. Ashley Mitchell then plated Grim with a two-base hit.

In another Tri-County clash, Jessica Harrell drove in three runs with a pair of homers and Janna Gaburo fanned 13 in tossing a four-hit shutout, leading Schalick to an 8-0 win at Clayton.

Burlington County Tournament. Taylor Steele struck out 15 in shutting down Northern Burlington on two hits, and Kerry Farrell's two-run single in the first put host Holy Cross on course for a 4-0 semifinal win.

The Lancers will meet New Egypt in the tournament championship game on Tuesday night at Northern Burlington.

Colonial. Rachel McClaskey produced two hits, two runs and two RBIs in Overbrook's 6-1 win over visiting Gateway.

Cape-Atlantic. Shauna Como and Ashley Romeo teamed up to bat 4 for 5, score six times and knock in four runs for St. Joseph in a 13-1 romp at Our Lady of Mercy.
