The first day of the two-day PIAA District 1 Class AA swimming championships on Friday at La Salle University turned out to be a good one for the girls of Villa Maria Academy, setting one meet record and putting a pair of individual champions on the victory stand.
The Hurricanes 200-yard medley relay team set a meet record of 1 minute, 49.63 seconds.
Villa Maria's Sarah Hitchens won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.22 seconds and teammate Lauren Law posted a 2:09.07 to take the 200 individual medley relay.
Merion Mercy's Lizzie Manning won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.08.
In Class AAA girls, Downingtown East's Danielle Siverling, a North Carolina recruit, won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.08. She posted a 1:48.10 in the same event on Dec. 10 and a 1:47.49 at the PIAA Class AAA state championships a year ago to win that event.
Upper Dublin set a meet record of 1:47.33 in the 200 AAA medley relay.
Council Rock North took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.74.
In the boys' competition, one of the highlights came from West Chester Henderson's Andrew Kosic, who set a meet record of 48.69 in the Class AAA 100 butterfly.
Kosic's teammate at Henderson, Thomas McCormick, won the 200 individual medley (1:53.99). North Penn's Pat Dunigan (1:56.95) was second.
Another record went to Haverford High's Shane Ryan, who posted a 1:39.4 in the 200 freestyle.
In Class AA, Upper Perkiomen's Mason Cassel took the 100 boys' butterfly in 52.71.
Springfield (Montco) won the Class AA 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.83. Bishop Shanahan was second in 1:30.71.
Holy Ghost Prep's Dan Gosek won the 50 freestyle in 20.91. Jake Oescheger of Springfield (Montco) finished second (21.72).
Pottsgrove's Tyler Gross (2:02.48) won the 200 IM.
