Tues. S.J. girls’ roundup: Moorestown upsets Pemberton

The Moorestown girls' basketball team picked the right time get hot, as the 14th-seeded Quakers extended their season-best winning streak to five by shocking No. 3 seed Pemberton, 57-39, on Tuesday in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 tournament.

Stephanie Toy scored 10 of her 16 points at the foul line for Moorestown (11-15), which connected on 22 of 35 free throws. Marisa Randazzo added 13 points in the Quakers' balanced attack, while Tempest Lewis had 14 points for Pemberton (18-9).

In other South Jersey Group 3 openers:

Heather Juhring's 30-point outburst featured eight three-point baskets, and second-seeded Kingsway seized an early 20-8 advantage in bouncing No. 15 seed Westampton Tech, 76-35.

Liz Faulkner (14 points) and Maddie Flynn (12) also aided the Dragons' fast start. Tech received 20 points from Danielle Owes.

Timber Creek also wasted no time in taking command, with the seventh-seeded Chargers running out to a 35-6 halftime lead in dispatching No. 10 seed Cherry Hill West, 65-23.

Jasmine Martin, who keyed the early onslaught by scoring 10 of her 24 points in the second quarter, went on to add five rebounds and five assists. Deanna Miller contributed 16 points for Timber Creek, which will visit Kingsway on Thursday in the quarterfinal round.

Emily Gillian dealt five assists to go with her season-high 15 points, and Julia Duggan battled inside for 12 points and seven rebounds in powering No. 4 seed Ocean City past 13th-seeded Pinelands, 58-24.

Fifth-seeded Seneca advanced with a 69-33 rout of No. 12 seed Highland. The Golden Eagles blew the game open with a 22-9 second-quarter surge, which included 11 of Brittany Snow's 23 points.

Shanice Maynard (24 points) and Chanelle Perry (15) sparked a second-half comeback that carried ninth-seeded Woodrow Wilson to a 49-44 win at No. 8 seed Manchester Township.

South Jersey Group 1. Cedar Creek celebrated the first playoff win in program history in dominant fashion, when the 10th-seeded Pirates scuttled the seventh-seeded Clayton Clippers, 57-24. The Stefanski sisters - Morgan (16 points), Mercina (13) and Mikila (12) - provided more than enough ammo to sink Clayton, which was led by Jewel Brown's 11 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.

History was made on another court as well, with Kerry Player totaling 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals to post No. 9 seed Cape May Tech's first triple-double ever while ruining the postseason debut of eighth-seeded LEAP Academy Charter, 58-34. Alexis Olson (18 points) and Lauryn Fields (16) topped Tech's scoring, and Brandi Harvey-Carr scored 20 for LEAP.

Lavon Childress cleared 16 rebounds to go with her game-high 27 points, and Tiaja Harrold made four three-pointers in scoring 22 as third-seeded Paulsboro eliminated No. 14 seed Penns Grove, 72-51. Taylor Smith's 20 points led the Red Devils.

Alex Gravinese picked up 7 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, enabling fifth-seeded Audubon to put away No. 12 seed Woodbury, 48-39, for the Green Wave's first playoff win since 2004. Dominique Sellers kept the Thundering Herd close with 18 points.

Fourth-seeded Salem rode a dozen points by Kenya Woods to a 40-31 victory over No. 13 seed Glassboro.

The tandem of Gabrielle Cooper and Cori Conner combined for 32 points and 17 rebounds, paving the way for second-seeded Gloucester to slam 15th-seeded Schalick, 57-24.

Meghan Nowak showcased her talents on the perimeter and in the lane, knocking down a pair of treys in scoring 29 points and going hard to the boards for 17 rebounds, and Alisha Fox lit up the Pitman defense for 18 points, as No. 6 seed Gateway tamed the 11th-seeded Panthers, 62-44.

Central Jersey Group 3. Simi Adewumi and Alicia Bradley combined for 30 points, as No. 15 seed Burlington Township put a scare into second-seeded Hopewell Valley before falling, 49-43.

The Falcons held a two-point edge with 3 minutes, 25 seconds left in regulation, but the hosts' Nellie Tanguay drained three baseline jumpers down the stretch.

Rachel Dortch scored 16 for No. 16 seed Northern Burlington in a 77-28 loss at top-seeded Neptune.

Central Jersey Group 1. Sarah Muchowski poured in 27 points, including 10 in a 12-0 second-quarter spree that put No. 10 seed Florence ahead to stay in a 47-29 triumph at seventh-seeded Perth Amboy.

Courtney Davis had 15 points and Dominique Laing scored 11, but No. 14 seed Burlington City (5-18) didn't have enough weapons to prevent third-seeded Highland Park from waltzing away with a 67-42 win.
