Tues. Pa. girls’ roundup: Ryan wins after hitching a ride

There were plenty of stories about airport delays over the last couple of days, but it's hard to top the one told by the basketball teams representing Archbishop Ryan and St. Basil.

Ryan went overtime on Tuesday night in beating St. Basil, 42-38, in a first-round game of the Ft. Myers Tournament after the two teams went overtime getting to Florida.

Ryan found out its flight to Florida was canceled, heard St. Basil was boarding a bus and hopped a ride with the Panthers.

After a 24-hour ride, tournament officials hastily rearranged the tournament to allow the Ragdolls and Panthers to play each other.

Brittany Wood scored 20 points to lead the Ragdolls into a semifinal game Wednesday (1:30 p.m.) against Suncoast (Fla.).

Allentown Allen Tournament. Rebecca Bennett scored only two points, but they were the most important ones in a 35-33 basketball win for Springfield (Delaware County) over Northampton in a first-round game.

Bennett, a 5-foot-8 freshman forward forced into duty when Tori Grossi fouled out with two minutes left in the game, was fouled over the top on a defensive rebound with 6.7 seconds left and calmly made both free throws to break a 33-33 tie.

Boyertown Tournament. Downingtown East coach Bob Schnure won his 700th career game when the Cougars topped Nazareth High, 43-42, in a tournament semifinal.

Schnure, who is one of only 10 coaches in the state to have reached 700 wins, took five state championships, 19 league titles, and 11 district titles on the way to those 700 wins. He has only 205 losses.

Boardwalk Classic. In the Southern Cape Bracket at the Wildwoods Convention Center, Jessica Sylvester had 14 points for Nazareth Academy in a 59-17 win over Oakcrest (N.J.).

In another bracket game, Prep Charter placed three starters in double figures, led by Kahleah Copper's 20 points, in a 72-44 win over Cedar Creek.

Altoona Tournament. Abington advanced to Wednesday night's title game with a 52-35 win over Gateway. Aiyannah Peal's 16 points led the Ghosts.

Garnet Valley Tournament. The host Jaguars (4-2) got 10 points apiece from Coley Ricci and Missy Koscinski in a 49-15 win over Chichester.

George W. Snear Tournament. At the Fellowship House in Conshohocken, Steph Smith had 13 points and eight rebounds for Mount St. Joseph in a 48-14 win over Norristown.

Marple Newtown Tournament. Denise McKeown's two free throws with 15 seconds left gave host Marple Newtown a 52-50 semifinal win over Academy Park.

The Tigers will face Octorara in the title game on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

Pine Grove Classic. Due to Monday's inclement weather, Ridley played two games, falling to host Pine Grove, 49-40, in a semifinal before beating Atholton (Md.), 59-55, in a consolation game. Kelsey Yori's 15 points led the Green Raiders.

Reading Invitational. Megan Decker had 19 points and 11 rebounds for St. Hubert in a 57-42 win over Chester.

Reservoir (Md.) Tournament. Kristina O'Sullivan's 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 steals powered Upper Merion to a 67-63 win over host Reservoir in a consolation game.

Robert Hopf Tournament. At Jenkintown, Sacred Heart placed 10 players in the scoring column with a 43-20 win over MaST Charter in a first-round game. Hannah Rush led the way with 10 points.

Sacred Heart will face Bishop McDevitt in Wednesday's 5:30 p.m. title game.

Bishop McDevitt got 15 points from Chelsea Burrough in a 34-28 semifinal win over Jenkintown.

Upper Dublin Tournament. The host Cardinals rolled into the title game with a 50-24 win over Oxford behind Taylor Bryant's 14 points.

The Cardinals will face Villa Joseph Marie on Wednesday night for the title. The Jems were 59-36 winners over Hatboro-Horsham in the other semifinal. Mary Newell led the Jems with 16 points.

Unionville Tournament. Haverford High used 25 points from Jaclyn Gantz to beat Phoenixville, 62-45, in a first-round game.

Spring-Ford Tournament. Tori Steinberg had 18 points for Central Bucks South in a 59-31 win over Conestoga in a tournament played in a round-robin format.

Downingtown West beat Parkland, 46-30, in another tournament game behind Brittany Sicinski's 20 points.

Stan Novak Tournament. At Springfield (Montgomery County), the host Spartans got 15 points from Elise DiFilippo in a 49-12 win over Friends Select.

West Chester Classic. At West Chester University in a consolation bracket game, freshman Sox Alexander scored 16 points for Shipley in a 51-43 win over Central.

The Gators advance to a fifth-place game Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) against Avon Grove.

Avon Grove defeated Freire Charter, 49-43, in another consolation game. Jasmine Jones led the Red Devils with 16 points.

Westminster Academy (Fla.) Tournament. Lindsay Cras had 18 points, three assists, and three steals for Archbishop Prendergast in a 61-34 win over American Heritage (Fla.). Brittany Merkle added 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Pandas.

Wissahickon Tournament. Chelsey Dutkiewicz had nine points, five steals, and three assists for Lansdale Catholic in a 41-32 semifinal win over Souderton.

In the other semifinal, Gwynedd-Mercy withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally to hold off host Wissahickon, 34-31. The Trojans scored nine of the game's final 11 points to get back in it. The Monarchs' Caroline Shimrock led all scorers with 17 points.

Central. Katie Fitzpatrick's 13 points and 14 rebounds led Upper Darby past visiting Radnor, 48-43.

Ches-Mont. Despite shooting only 21 for 55 from the free-throw line, West Chester East won at Kennett, 37-35. Caitlin Pavlo's 13 points led the Vikings.
