Suburban One National girls dominate state meet

Suburban One National Conference girls came away with team and individual titles in the PIAA State Class AAA cross-country championships on Saturday at the Parkview Country Club course in Hershey.

Pennsbury coasted to the team title with 81 points, well ahead of second-place finisher West Chester Henderson (119) and Council Rock North's Lindsay Rheiner too the individual gold medal with a time of 18 minutes, 42 seconds. Pottsville's Paige Stoner finished second (18:48).

Pennsbury's depth carried the day, led by Sara Sargent, who finished sixth (18:59). Teammate Ann Herman finished 21st (19:21) and Erica Gray (19:42) was 30th.

In the boys' AAA competition, also at Hershey, North Allegheny won individual and team championships.

Ryan Gil of North Allegheny (15:52) beat Altoona's Wade Endress by two seconds to take the individual title, while the best finish by a District 1 athlete was registered by Council Rock North's Chris Campbell (15;55), who finished fourth.

West Chester Henderson used a 16th-place finish from Bryan Andrews and a 27th-place finish Austin Stecklair to grab the runner-up team spot in the state.

North Allegheny's 124 points was 18 better than the Warriors' 146. Henderson finished ahead of District 12 standard-bearer Cardinal O'Hara (160).

The best individual finish by a District 12 athlete was from Tom Trainer (La Salle), who was 17th.

In Class AA boys, Lower Moreland had a fifth-place team finish and John Trueman of Springfield (Montgomery County) finished sixth.

In Class AA girls, St. Basil registered a fifth-place team finish and Villa Joseph Marie's Emma Mahony had the best individual finish, fourth, among Pennsylvania runners.
