SE Pa. roundup: Harriton girls win state Class AA tennis crown

Harriton needed straight-set wins at second and third singles to beat Wyomissing, 3-2, Saturday in the PIAA State Class AA girls' team tennis championship match at the Hershey Racquet Club.

It was the seventh-consecutive state title for the Rams, who got the singles wins from Hannah Drayton (No. 2) and Marnie Blumenthal (No. 3).

 

Cross-Country

Chestnut Hill Academy's Dustin Wilson took advantage of familiar surroundings by dominating the field in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Championships at Belmont Plateau.

Wilson covered the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 47 seconds to finish well ahead of Abington Friends' Sam Aziz (16:23). It was the first time the race was ever held in Philadelphia.

Germantown Friends, which placed the next two runners, ran away with the team title for the second consecutive year, getting 36 points to second place Chestnut Hill Academy's 87.

In the girls' competition, Penn Charter's Catie Skinner posted a time of 19:10 to finish first, eight seconds ahead of Notre Dame's Maria Seykora. Notre Dame, though, won the team title with 44 points, ahead of Agnes Irwin's 96.

 

Boys' Soccer

Isaac Arthur's goal in the 68th minute gave Westtown a 1-0 Friends Schools League semifinal win over George School at Shipley.

In the other semifinal, freshman goalie Pablo Sisniega recorded his 11th shutout of the season to help host Shipley past Moorestown Friends (N.J.), 3-0. Julius Mouser, Mike Stewart, and Geoff Stewart scored.

District 1 Class AAA. Host Lower Merion needed a 4-1 advantage in penalty kicks to beat Pennridge after two scoreless overtimes in a quarterfinal playoff game.

In other quarterfinals:

Kyle McDonald scored twice to lead Pennsbury past host Wissahickon, 4-1.

At Central Bucks West, Miguel Diaz scored off an assist from Ben Marks four minutes into overtime to give Central Bucks East a 1-0 win over Strath Haven.

Shane Donovan recorded seven saves to earn the shutout for the Patriots (14-4-3).

Inter-Ac. Goalkeeper Michael Baron had five saves to post his fourth league shutout for Penn Charter in a 2-0 win over Chestnut Hill. Sean O'Brien and Jeff Blechschmidt scored.

 

Girls' Soccer

Stephanie Heys and Priscilla Wiggins each had a pair of hat tricks to lead host George School past Westtown, 7-0, in a league semifinal.

In the other semifinal, junior Teddy Chase scored an unassisted goal with 17 minutes left to give host Shipley a 1-0 win over Germantown Friends.

 

Field Hockey

Ellie Andersen scored a pair of first-half goals to get host Shipley off to a good start in a 3-0 Friends Schools League semifinal win over Westtown.

Andersen, who now has 12 goals for the season, advances to the league championship game with her teammates at home on Tuesday against Moorestown Friends (N.J.).

Illana Wolfson, who also scored, added her 12th goal of the season for the Gators (14-0-1).

Allison Dombroski assisted on both Shipley goals, her 10th and 11th assists of the season.

Shipley goalie Alex Cones had six saves for her ninth shutout.

Mid-Atlantic Prep. Heather Morris had five goals and an assist for Hill School in a 10-0 win at Blair Academy (N.J.)
