Sat. S.J. boys’ and girls’ roundup: Eastern wins hockey showdown

A pair of South Jersey field hockey powers collided on Saturday in their annual nonleague tune-up for the NJSIAA sectional playoffs, and experience weighed heavily in the outcome.

Senior forward Cori Allen had a hand in all of the scoring and junior Alana Barry supplied shutout goaltending, sending top-ranked Eastern to a 4-0 home win over third-ranked Moorestown.

Allen had a hat trick and assisted on Brittany Evangelisti's goal for the Vikings, who improved to 18-0 on the season.

The loss ended a tough week for Moorestown (12-5), which suffered one-goal setbacks against second-ranked Shawnee, seventh-ranked Haddonfield and Robbinsville over four days prior to facing Eastern.

In another nonleague clash, Lindsey Hatch produced two goals and four assists to key fourth-ranked Washington Township's 8-0 romp past visiting Schalick.

The Minutemaids also saw Keli Margiotta, Devin Muracco and Kaitlyn Grabert combine for four goals and three assists.

Cape-Atlantic. Emily DeMarco scored from in close, knocking in a pass from fellow freshman Molly Mullee 10 minutes into the second half, allowing host St. Joseph to remain undefeated with a 2-1 comeback win over Hammonton.

The Blue Devils jumped on top early on Taylor Rizzotte's goal, but St. Joseph (16-0) pulled even with five minutes to go in the first half when Gina Smith converted a feed from Megan DeMarco.

Both goaltenders turned in impressive performances, with Becky Boffo making 13 saves for the Wildcats and Hammonton netmider Jess Sochocky turning aside a dozen shots.

Taylor Ng of Haddonfield and Woodstown's Lindsay Kayati pulled out semifinal wins to advance to the finals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships, held at Haddonfield.

The doubles title match will be an all-Haddonfield affair, pitting Meghan Burns and Catherine Senopoulos against teammates Rebecca Senopoulos and Victoria Martinez.
