Thurs. S.J. football roundup: Duo propels Paul VI to victory

Johnell Anderson and Jakwail Bailey touched the football just nine times on Thursday night, but the tandem did enough damage to power fifth-ranked Paul VI to a 35-6 victory at Cherry Hill West in the West Jersey League Constitution Division.

Anderson gained 77 yards and scored two touchdowns on five carries, while Bailey picked up 107 yards on four catches - including a 46-yard TD reception.

Greg Webb and Matt Barnett combined for 15 tackles for the Eagles (2-0 overall, 2-0 division). West (0-2, 0-2) scored on the final play - a seven-yard scamper by Danny O'Sullivan.

Florence 21, Robbinsville 14 - The visiting Flashes (1-1, 1-0) needed D'Andre Davis' 26-yard touchdown pass to Paul Fletcher with 1 minute, 6 seconds left in the game to escape with a Liberty Division success against Robbinsville (0-2, 0-1).

Florence led by 14-0 in the third quarter after a pair of Jake Flehr TD runs, but Robbinsville rallied to tie entering the final period.

Burlington Township 42, Princeton 7 - Senior Vinnie Pini got the host Falcons (2-0) off the ground, taking back punts 52 and 75 yards for scores in the first half of the interdivision game.

Jordan Hunter added a pair of 1-yard touchdown plunges for Township, which is averaging 45 points per game. Princeton fell to 0-2.

Rancocas Valley 16, Steinert 6 - DeShawn Jones ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, carrying the Red Devils (2-0, 1-0) past host Steinert (0-2, 0-1) in an interdivision matchup.

Jones scored on a 26-yard run with 1:07 left in the first half, and added a third-quarter insurance score with a 55-yard dash.

West Windsor-Plainsboro South 14, Trenton Central 7 - Brian Schoenauer's 45-yard TD run in the third quarter broke a 7-7 deadlock and lifted visiting WWPS (1-1, 1-1) to a Capitol Division win.

Schoenauer passed for 226 yards, and Trenton's (0-2, 0-2) Devante Abner threw for 167 yards and a touchdown.

Hamilton West 35, Lawrence 7 - In a game stopped by bad weather with 3:21 to play, host Hamilton West (1-1, 1-1) claimed a Valley Division triumph over the Cardinals (0-2, 0-1).

Jamie Williams ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and caught a 13-yard scoring pass from Marvin Leontus.



Chris Davis churned out 205 yards on 10 carries and scored four touchdowns, powering host Haddonfield past Sterling, 35-0, in a Liberty Division season opener for both teams.

Davis, a senior running back who rushed for 12 TDs last season, scored on runs of 78, 35 and 24 yards - and took back an interception 57 yards to close out the scoring.

The Bulldogs defense picked off four passes, including a pair by Chris' twin brother Kevin Davis.



Five South Jersey football games were postponed on Thursday by rain and lightning.

Here are the rescheduled dates: St. Augustine at Mainland, Friday at 4 p.m.; Bordentown at Ewing, Friday at 7; Winslow Township at Shawnee, Sunday at 1; Moorestown at Seneca, Sunday at 1; and West Windsor-Plainsboro North at Notre Dame, Sunday at 6.
