Fri. N.J. roundup: Palmyra boys win soccer title
After battling Pitman to a 2-2 tie through regulation and two overtime periods, visiting Palmyra captured the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 boys' soccer title Friday with a 5-4 edge in the penalty-kick tiebreaker.
"It was a tough way to end the season," Pitman coach Matt Newcomb said. "I thought we had the better of the play, but just couldn't finish today."
Palmyra, seeded No. 3, took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half on goals from Bill Devlin and Sean Mullan, but top-seeded Pitman (18-2-1) knotted the score on Eric Todd's penalty kick with two minutes left.
Palmyra and Pitman each converted three of five attempts in the best-of-five penalty kicks, forcing the sudden-death round.
Palmyra (16-4-3), which won its first title since 2005, advances to the State Group 1 semifinals against Central Jersey champion Metuchen at Toms River South.
Central Jersey Group 4. Rancocas Valley's quest to repeat as state champion was derailed when the Red Devils dropped a 2-1 overtime verdict at top-seeded Toms River North in the sectional title game.
"The weather, especially the wind, was a factor today," Rancocas Valley coach Damon Petras said. "Toms River North likes to play long ball. They took advantage of the wind, but it really hampered our possession game. We just didn't adapt to the playing conditions as well as we could have."
After trailing, 1-0, at the half on a goal by North's Tyler Higgins, Rancocas Valley (19-3-3) got the equalizer when Kyle Teschko headed in a corner kick from Luca May with 13 minutes left in regulation.
Toms River North (16-2-2) scored the decisive goal 2:30 into the first overtime period on a 26-yard shot by Rafael Vergard.
"Toms River really bought it to us and were definitely the better team today," Petras said.
Central Jersey Group 2. Ali Gocmez converted the last of Delran's penalty kicks in the best-of-five tiebreaker, giving the Bears their second straight sectional title by winning at top-seeded Raritan (15-1-3).
The teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime as Delran goalie Brad Schmidt posted his 12th shutout of the season.
In the postgame tiebreaker, second-seeded Delran (16-2-2) prevailed with a 5-4 advantage, advancing to the state semifinals against West Deptford on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Washington Township.
