Let's play three!

Last night, in the teams' second meeting in three weeks, West Catholic triumphed over Bishop McDevitt again, this time by a 35-7 score at Northeast High, to claim its second consecutive Catholic League Class AA championship.

But all is not lost for the Lancers. They will get a third crack at the high-powered Burrs next weekend in the semifinal round of the PIAA District 1-12 Class AA sub-regional playoffs. That's because, based on a power-points system that closed after Week 7 in the Public League and Week 8 in the Catholic League, West finished as the No. 2 seed and McDevitt No. 3.

Are three games in four weeks versus the same opponent too much?

"I think so," said Brian Fluck, West's 11th-year boss. "There needs to be a better system."

West and McDevitt will go at it for a third time on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Southern High. At 12 p.m. at the same site, Bok, the Public League titlist, will meet Lower Moreland, District 1's representative. Last year, the Burrs crushed Bok, 55-0, for the "City Title" and went on to the state final in Hershey.

It was the fourth consecutive league crown for West. Before the Catholic League joined the PIAA last year, it won Blue Division titles in 2006 and 2007.

Against the Lancers last night, West racked up 436 total yards of offense. They held quarterback Drew Siegfried and company to 22 yards rushing and 89 passing.

"We know each other so well," Fluck said. "It's just a matter of who gets it done better up front."

West QB Jarred Evans, a senior transfer from Holy Cross in Flushing, N.Y., connected on 7 of 10 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. At Holy Cross, he directed a spread offense.

"We threw the ball about 85 percent of the time last year," he said. "I don't do as much passing now, but I'm just happy to be a part of championship team and am looking forward to the state playoffs."

Doing most of his damage in the second half, when the Burrs added three scores to a 14-7 halftime lead, junior tailback Joshua Mathis carried 21 times for 128 yards and a pair of TDs.

West's offensive line included center Dom DiGalbo, guards Marcus Burwell and Jake Zuzek, tackles Rodney Linder and Erik Harper, and tight end Jim Lynch. Brian Mosby and Albert Campbell were the fullbacks.

Evans completed scoring tosses to three juniors: wideout Quran Kent (80-yarder late in the second quarter), tailback Brandon Hollomon (12 carries for 84 yards) and wideout Jaelen Strong-Rankin.

"He's still learning," Fluck said of Evans, "but he's doing a good job of keeping his poise."

McDevitt's only score came in the first quarter, on a 1-yard sneak by Siegfried. Two plays earlier, he had hooked up with Matt Conroy along the right sideline for a 56-yard gain.
