Unionville captures first District 1 AAA soccer title
With the game already in hand, Rob Crowley saw an opening from 35 yards out and let it rip in the 60th minute. Crowley said he thought, "Why not?"
"I knew it was going in," Crowley said. "I saw it the whole time."
The strike was perfect. Downingtown West keeper Bobby Rosato didn't have a chance as the ball curved into the net.
It was that kind of night for Unionville. Everything went the Indians' way en route to the school's first-ever boys' soccer District 1 AAA championship. Unionville defeated Downingtown West, 3-0, Saturday night at Souderton Area High School.
As the district's top overall seed in the 16-team PIAA state tournament, Unionville will now face Public League champion and No. 2 seed from District 12, George Washington, in Tuesday's first round.
Downingtown West will take on District 12's top seed, Father Judge, also on Tuesday in the first round of states.
For Unionville, the historic championship victory marks a complete turnaround. The Indians didn't even make district playoffs last year. And this was the third time this season that Unionville defeated Downingtown West, the defending state champs.
"It's great," said Unionville coach Rich Garber, who is in his 10th season. "One of my goals going into this whole thing was to see how far we could go. In the back of my mind, it's, 'Can we ever win a state title like these guys, Downingtown West?'"
The first accomplishment is a district title. And Unionville's Chris Somerville had the game on his foot less than two minutes in. After Drew Sommer took a fine entry pass and delivered a cross to Sam Yarosh, Somerville found his space in front of the net. Yarosh fed the ball right to him and Somerville slipped the ball past a diving Rosato.
In the previous two wins against Downingtown West, Unionville squeaked out 1-0 wins both times. The second victory was for the Ches-Mont League title, also a first in Unionville history. Third time around, the early Unionville pressure was too much for the Whippets.
The Indians dominated possession and besides a mad scramble in front of the Unionville goal in the 19th minute, Downingtown West could barely mount an attack.
Then, in the 20th minute, Unionville iced the game.
Off of a bad turnover at midfield, Somerville took the ball and hit Sommer on the run downfield. Sommer was taken down from behind by a Downingtown West defender just inside the box and a penalty kick was awarded.
Crowley took the kick and buried it in the left corner for a two-goal lead midway through the first half.
The breaks continued for Unionville in the second half. When the Whippets were awarded a penalty kick in the 48th minute, Unionville goalie Cory White guessed correctly and made the diving stop on Chris Shultz.
"We had to come out fired up," Somerville said. "We beat them twice and they wanted revenge. We got the job done."
