Fri. Pa. roundup: Wissahickon advances in hockey playoffs
Second-half goals from Ashley Bossert and Gretchen Guaglionone rallied top-seeded Wissahickon past No. 3 Great Valley, 2-1, in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA third-place field hockey game at Plymouth Whitemarsh Friday.
Emily Hagar scored for the Patriots.
Inter-Ac. Katie Gerzabek scored twice as host Notre Dame remained unbeaten in the league with a 4-0 win over Episcopal Academy.
Bree Buysse and Maura McKendrick each chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Irish (17-1-1 overall, 10-0-1 league).
Lily Cramer scored five goals for Germantown Academy in a 5-1 win at Agnes Irwin. Cramer scored three in the first half for the Patriots (12-7-1, 6-3-1).
Nadya Mason scored for the Owls.
Mid-Atlantic Prep. Heather Morris scored a first-half goal that turned out to be the game-winner for host Hill School in a 2-0 win over Hun School (N.J.).
The Blues (12-1 overall, 4-0 league) also got a goal from Carol Boyd.
Girls' Soccer
Andi Stampone, Kacie Kergides and Cailin DiGiacomo scored for host Germantown Academy in a 3-0 Inter-Ac League win over Agnes Irwin.
Boys' Soccer
Brett Campbell and Scott Safford scored goals to give Haverford School a 2-0 Inter-Ac League win over visiting Chestnut Hill Academy.
Harrison Kendel and Grove Stewart assisted on the goals and Max Kurtzman stopped four shots to earn the shutout. Blue Devils' goalie Judd Hayne stopped six shots.
In another league game, Spencer Ivey scored the lone goal of the game for Episcopal Academy in a 1-0 win over host Penn Charter.
Sean McIntyre assisted on the goal midway through the first half. Hayden Walling earned the shutout in goal with six saves.
Mid-Atlantic Prep. Carlo Bettini scored twice in the final four minutes of the game and pulled Hill School into a 2-2 double-overtime tie with visiting Hun School.
Alex Hero assisted on Bettini's first goal and Ted Walter preserved the tie without recording a save.
Girls' Tennis
Defending state Class AA singles champion Madison Cohen of Lower Moreland kept her hopes for a repeat alive with a solid performance in both the first round and quarterfinals at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday.
Cohen topped District 7 third-place seed Spencer Caravaggio of Quaker Valley, 6-3, 7-5, in the first round and followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bishop Guilfoyle's Allison Kristofco in the quarterfinals.
Harriton's Jen Shulkin also won her first two matches in the AA singles.
In Class AAA singles, Tessa Lyons of Strath Haven won her first two matches to also advance to Saturday's semifinals.
The Wissahickon doubles pair of Rachel Fein and Katie Kennedy also advanced to Saturday's Class AAA doubles semifinals.
