Interboro tops Glen Mills for 12th straight title

Unbeaten Interboro managed to survive a wild finish Friday night to post a 20-13 win over visiting Glen Mills and win its 12th straight Del-Val League championship.

It was the 10th straight win of the season for the Bucs, who have already assured themselves of a slot in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA playoffs that begin next weekend.

The Bucs had a 20-6 lead with the clock winding down, but the Bulls (6-4 overall, 4-1 league) scored on a 13-yard run by quarterback Jurell Smalls with 4 minutes, 43 secondss left to play. Suddenly, the Bucs had a fight on their hands.

Following the kickoff, Interboro found itself with a fourth-down-and-inches situation at its own 40. The Bulls stopped quarterback Brett Creigton's bid for the first down.

Smalls threw incomplete on his team's first play, but a personal foul against the Bucs moved the ball to the Interboro 25. The Bulls moved five yards in the next three plays, but a pass from Smalls to Gabriel Yuille on fourth down came up six inches short of a first down. Interboro then was able to run out the clock.

Interboro broke a scoreless game early in the second quarter with a 94-yard march. The Bucs got the ball at their own six after a punt with about two minutes left in the first quarter. The big plays in the march were a 36-yard run by senior Joe Pfaff and a 30-yard pass play from Creigton. Creigton hit Pfaff again for 13 yards and the TD.

The Bulls came right back marching 77 yards. Like the Bucs, the Bulls went to the air for their TD. Smalls hit Yuille for a 16-yard score.

Interboro scored the clinching TD with less than three minutes gone in the third quarter. A 65-yard kickoff return by Pfaff set the Bucs up in Glen Mills territory. Creigton eventually scored from six yards out.

Glen Mills had an opportunity to score in the first quarter but couldn't take advantaage of it. After recovering an Interboro fumble at its own 30, Glen Mills moved to the Interboro 11-yard line, largely on two long passes from quarterback Smalls to Eric Braxton and Yuille. But, after a five-yard penalty for an illegal shift, Smalls was picked off by Adam Smith.
