Coleman fuels Kingsway's rout of Paul VI

The midfielder scored four goals in the South Jersey Group 3 field hockey quarterfinal.

Aubrey Coleman wanted to talk about the team yesterday after Kingsway blanked Paul VI, 6-0, in a quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA South Group 3 field hockey tournament.

But everybody else's focus was on her.

Coleman, a senior midfielder, pumped in four goals in a convincing win for the second-seeded Dragons over Paul VI, the seventh seed. The Eagles' inability to contain Coleman was a big reason why they fell with such a thud.

Kingsway (16-3), ranked No. 7 by The Inquirer, advances to a semifinal clash with Lacey, the third seed, in a game scheduled for noon tomorrow.

The Dragons had been hoping to play Central Regional, a team with which they are familiar. But they appear prepared to play anyone, as they demonstrated against Paul VI (10-8-1).

Coleman said Kingsway's strength starts with the defense and goaltender Becca May and continues upward to Stephanie Toomey at center forward.

"We've also got people from the bench who are strong coming in," Coleman said. "We're so solid. There's no weakness at all, and we're keeping together as a team."

The Eagles tried to double-team Coleman, the Dragons' leading scorer with 23 goals. But that didn't work well. And when the Iowa-bound senior slapped in her last two goals, she was left unmarked in a defensive breakdown.

Still, Paul VI's defensive unit of Shannon McNeill, Erin Magee, and Maddie Reiss did a good job of helping freshman goalkeeper Meredith Stocklin keep the Dragons from breaking the game wide open in the first half.

Stocklin faced 20 shots, made 12 saves and allowed two goals in the first 30 minutes of play.

Toomey scored the first goal on a penalty corner insert by Emily Poole with 11 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the first half for a 1-0 lead. Then, with 9:04 left in the half, Coleman scored in the same manner, and Kingsway carried a 2-0 lead into intermission.

The Dragons had 21 corners before the half to none for Paul VI, which also had zero shots on May, who recorded her 11th consecutive shutout and 17th of the season.

Magee, the Eagles' flier, helped limit Kingsway's goal production in the first half by speeding to the player with the ball.

Magee said she felt as though she was disrupting the Dragons on set corner plays because they had trouble getting their shots off.

"I tried my best out there even though the field was so muddy and slippery," Magee said.

In the second half, Coleman made the score 3-0 with 24:17 remaining to play, but Paul VI's offense came alive, too.

The Eagles fired nine shots on goal and had three corners. However, they couldn't get a shot past Kingsway's defense.

"She was really fast," Paul VI senior forward Kerri Weber said of May. "She came out when she was supposed to. She was good."

Patrice Kilvington, Paul VI's coach, said she told her girls to go all out in the second half because they had nothing to lose.

Kingsway coach Sara Lewis praised Coleman as a midfielder who is able to transition the ball to the offense and get back on defense with great skill.

Paul VI 0 0 - 0

Kingsway 2 4 - 6
