Prendergast wins Catholic field hockey title
Brooke Stretch beat Cardinal O'Hara goalie Mary Kate O'Connell with 2 minutes, 53 seconds left in the second overtime Monday to give Archbishop Prendergast its first Catholic League field hockey championship since the late 1970s.
Stretch's 19th goal of the season was the only one scored, and it came on a pass from teammate Kelsey McCrossin as Stretch streaked down the right side of the field.
"I just aimed for the opposite corner," Stretch said. "I was probably about 10 feet from the goal."
It was Stretch's second game-winner in as many games. Last week, she scored the only goal in the Pandas' semifinal win over Archbishop Carroll, which finished the regular-league season at 10-0 and was seeded first in the playoffs.
O'Hara was runner-up to Carroll in the regular season at 9-1. The Pandas (13-6 overall) took fourth place in the league at 7-3.
The Pandas had come close to winning the league championship last season, but, after surprising O'Hara in the semifinals, lost to Kennedy-Kenrick in the title game.
The win also puts the Pandas in the District 12 Class AAA championship game Saturday against Northeast, a 2-0 winner over Washington on Friday in the Public League title game. The district championship game is set for Saturday at the Public League's Germantown super-site.
"Brooke came out last season with the idea of taking charge of this team," Pandas coach Megan Staniszewski said. "She's a very important part of our offense."
Although both teams had scoring opportunities, especially in the two frantic overtime periods, O'Connell, Prendergast goalie Emily Moran, and their respective defenses kept it pretty even all night.
"It was a hard-fought game, and we knew it would be. It's the finals," Lions coach Nicole Nelson said. "Brooke [Stretch] has done a very nice job for Prendie. She's very good player."
