Chelsea Schmotzer got a late start in volleyball. Now she's hoping for a late finish.

The 5-foot-11 Schmotzer didn't start playing the sport until her freshman year at Cherry Hill West. Now the senior is a middle hitter for the Lions, who finished second in the Olympic Patriot Division with an 8-2 record. Cherry Hill West has a 21-5 overall record.

Cherry Hill West plays Moorestown tomorrow in the first round of the Group 3 state tournament. The Lions likely will be underdogs in every playoff game, but Schmotzer and her teammates are determined to stretch out the season.

Question: Are you surprised by the team's success this season?

Answer: We've grown so much as a team. We've just been getting better and better.

Q: What do you like best about volleyball?

A: I love my teammates. We play so well together. Everybody makes it fun.

Q: Have you always been a middle hitter?

A: I played some other spots, but this is my niche. I love it.

Q: Do you plan to play in college?

A: I hope so, maybe Division III or Division II. I'm still looking at schools, but I definitely want to try to play volleyball.

Q: Do you know what you want to study?

A: I'm thinking exercise science because I want to be a physical therapist. I help out in gym class with some kids with special needs and I find that so rewarding. I know that's what I want to do.

Q: Got a favorite subject in school?

A: I love anatomy. I also have a 3-D arts class that is great. It's like 45 minutes of being creative. I love art.

Q: What kind of music do you like?

A: All different kinds. I like Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, lots of alternative stuff.

Q: What's your favorite TV show?

A: I watch too much TV. I love The Office and Grey's Anatomy and lots of other shows. But my favorite show is definitely The Office.

Q: Do you have high hopes for the team entering the state tournament?

A: Definitely. We've been playing so well. I think we can play our best and really do something in states.

Three stars from last week

1. Triton's Rob Rawls won the boys' title and Highland's Megan Venables won the girls' title at the Camden County cross-country championships at Gloucester County College.

2. Setter Brooke Hassan led the way as the Williamstown girls' volleyball team geared up for the Group 4 state tournament by winning the McAleer Memorial Tournament.

3. Eastern's Kelsey Mitchell set the state record for career goals in a 10-0 field hockey victory over New Egypt. Mitchell had four in that game, and added three more in the Vikings' next game to raise her career total to 151. And counting.

Three tips for this week

1. Shawnee at Cherry Hill East, tomorrow at 2 p.m., in a great opening-round matchup of the South Jersey Group 4 boys' soccer tournament.

2. Fifth-seeded Camden Catholic at fourth-seeded Cinnaminson in a Central Jersey Group 2 field hockey quarterfinal tomorrow at 2 p.m.

3. Sectional championships in boys' and girls' cross-country, Saturday at 9 a.m. at Delsea.

Super Seven power rankings

1. Eastern field hockey (19-2): Thanks to two losses to national powers, the Vikings are a No. 3 seed in the South Jersey Group 4 tournament. That's just another log for this team's perpetual flame.

2. Haddonfield girls' tennis (32-0): Almost moved the Bulldogs to No. 1 after their remarkable play in Tournament of Champions, but Eastern cleans up against North Jersey powers in the T of C on a yearly basis. Haddonfield had a season for the ages, and with everybody back in 2010, it could do it again.

3. Haddonfield boys' cross-country (10-0): The Bulldogs dropped a spot through no fault of their own. If they have a problem with that, they can take it up with the tennis players in the hallways. But I wouldn't mess with those girls.

4. Lenape girls' soccer (17-1): Big games bring out the best in this team. Of course, they play a million of them. What's more impressive? Winning the coaches tournament three years in a row? Or going undefeated in Olympic American play three years in a row? How about winning the Group 4 state title three years in a row? Lenape has its sights set on Door No. 3 over the next three weeks.

5. Rancocas Valley boys' soccer (16-2-3): Senior midfielder Alec Golini scored the only goal as the Red Devils won the coaches tournament for the first time with a 1-0 victory yesterday over previously undefeated St. Augustine. Thanks to a killer schedule, Rancocas Valley is ready to make a run at another Group 4 state title.

6. Cherokee football (7-0): Eastern coach Dan Spittal thinks the Chiefs are as good this season as Mainland was last season. South Jersey Group 4 is going to have a whale of a tournament.

7. Williamstown football (7-0): Speaking of the South Jersey Group 4 tournament, the Braves might not get a home game in the first round, even with an 8-0 record. A rematch with Washington Township would be brimming with promise and peril for Williamstown.

Under consideration: Delsea football, St. Augustine football, Paul VI girls' soccer, Gloucester Catholic girls' soccer, St. Augustine boys' soccer.
