Burlington County wins Carpenter Cup
Riverside centerfielder Marc Mount has been doing a lot of running the last few days, but he has adeptly juggled baseball and all-star commitments.
Mount was in the middle of what turned out to be the winning play as Burlington County beat defending champion Suburban One League National/Bicentennial Athletic League, 2-1 in today's 24th annual Carpenter Cup championship at Citizens Bank Park.
It was the second title in this 16-team single-elimination tournament for Burlington County, which won in 2006.
Mount is also competing in Thursday's Adam Taliaferro Football Classic at Rowan University. He played in Carpenter Cup games the past three days and then ran back to Rowan for practice.
"It's been tiring, and I'm sore from getting hit in football and then playing baseball, but it's all worth it," Mount said.
With the score tied 1-1 in the seventh, Mount came to bat with two outs and Maple Shade's C.J. Szymczak on second base. Mount reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman and Szymczak kept running and scored on an errant throw home by the first baseman.
For Szymczak, it proved to be redemption. Usually a catcher, he was playing rightfield when he slipped chasing a flyball by Chris Bechter of Truman in the sixth inning. Szymczak got his glove on the ball, but it dropped for a two-base error.
SOL N/B then took a 1-0 lead on a RBI double by Council Rock South's Eric Ebert.
"Even though I'm not an outfielder, I was upset at that catch and I felt a big relief that I got to score," said Szymczak, who will attend Rowan.
Burlington County tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Cherokee junior Eric Barbieri. In four games Barbieri was 7 for 12 with four RBIs.
The winners got three scoreless innings from starter Kevin Comer, a sophomore righthander from Seneca who allowed one run in eight Carpenter Cup innings.
Maple Shade's Christian Rahman allowed an unearned run in three innings. Rancocas Valley's Dan Koneschusky earned the win with 12/3 innings of scoreless relief and Seneca junior lefthander James Coughlin picked up the save with 11/3 shutout innings.
