Paul VI's Morgan Muracco scored a goal yesterday at Bishop Eustace High that she and her fellow seniors will always remember.
With about 4 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in overtime in an Olympic Conference National Division soccer game, the midfielder took a pass from Deandra Turchi with her left foot and drilled the ball into the right corner of the net for a dramatic 3-2 victory over Eustace, ranked seventh in South Jersey by The Inquirer.
It was Paul VI's first victory over Eustace since the seniors entered the varsity program.
Muracco was speechless.
"I tackled [Muracco] first after the goal," said senior Ava McEachern, who scored the Eagles' first goal 2:16 into the second half to cut Eustace's lead to 2-1.
"It definitely makes our year. This [win] has been our goal since we were in eighth grade," which was the last time Paul VI (7-3 overall, 4-2 division) defeated the Crusaders (6-2-2, 4-1).
McEachern is the only other senior besides Muracco to have started since freshman year.
The Crusaders jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half on two headers by hustling marking back Jaclyn Logue.
Before intermission, Eustace continually beat the Eagles to the ball. The visitors appeared to be flat as the Crusaders outshot them, 6-4, and had three corner kicks to none.
But at intermission, Paul VI coach Keith Walters, who like his seniors had never beaten Eustace, told the Eagles they were playing without emotion.
That changed after McEachern's goal.
Then freshman Shannon Westhead scored in traffic in front of Eustace goalie Sara Keane to tie it, 2-2, with 10:22 left in regulation.
Entering the game, Keane and Paul VI goalie Sarah Hinkle had registered six shutouts each.
"This is the first team to score more than two goals on me since my sophomore year," said Keane, who has made an oral commitment to West Virginia. "After two goals, we got too relaxed. We let this one get away."
Logue said the outcome was disappointing.
"We were slow in the beginning of the second half," she said. "Maybe we were a little overconfident."
