Malvern's Ostick chooses Cornell

Influenced a bit by a former Inter-Academic League rival, Malvern Prep lineman Paul Ostick has made an oral commitment to play football for Cornell.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Ostick was given a tour of Cornell earlier this month by former Episcopal Academy standout Brian FitzPatrick, a sophomore wide receiver for the Big Red.

"He really made the weekend a great time," Ostick said yesterday.

As an offensive lineman, Ostick was a first-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection by The Inquirer last season. The 18-year-old from Havertown chose Cornell over Villanova and San Diego.

"I was really impressed with the coaches and the players at Cornell," he said. "It's a family-type atmosphere."

In Malvern's 55-42 basketball win over Episcopal Academy yesterday, Ostick, a reserve forward, contributed two points and three rebounds (two on offense) in six minutes.
