Chip Lutz, one of only four players to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Middle-Amateur Championship more than once, shot a 2-under-par 69 Wednesday at Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli to grab a share of the lead after the first round.

Lutz, 61, of LedgeRock, won last year's U.S. Senior Amateur at Hidden Creek in Egg Harbor Township, N.J. He carded four birdies and two bogeys over the 6,905-yard Waynesborough layout to move into a tie for first with Matthew Finger.

Finger, of DuPont, competed earlier this week in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y. He birdied five holes against three bogeys for his 2-under total.

Lutz won the GAP Middle-Amateur in 1998 and 2007.

Three players were tied at 70: Dan Bernard of Aronimink, Ben Smith of Huntingdon Valley, and Gregor Orlando of Philadelphia Cricket. Six contestants, including 2015 GAP player of the year Jeff Osberg of Huntingdon Valley, were at par 71.

All those who shot 78 or better made the cut, and 70 competitors will participate in Thursday's final round in the championship for players 25 and older.
