Vince Covello, a former resident of Havertown, fired a 2-under-par 69 Tuesday at Laurel Creek Country Club in Mount Laurel to win medalist honors in a qualifier for the U.S. Open.

Covello, 31, who now lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded three birdies and a bogey over a Laurel Creek course where he advanced through local qualifying for the Open in 2009. He competed last year on the Web.com.

Six players advanced from Laurel Creek into sectional qualifying, which will be held June 2. The survivors in sectionals will qualify for the U.S. Open beginning June 12 at Pinehurst (N.C.) Country Club.

Mark Hill, 26, an amateur from Media who plays out of Rolling Green Golf Club, took second place with a 70. He recorded five birdies in his first 15 holes, good enough to overcome a shaky finish.

A pair of professionals, Michael Tobiason Jr. of Wilmington, who competed in the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club, and Justin Martinson of Avondale, the 2010 Philadelphia Amateur champion, were among a quartet of players at 71.

Brian Hollins of Fairless Hills, assistant pro at Trenton Country Club, and pro Rex Riley of Short Hills, N.J., also were at 71.
