Ex-Voorhees resident fancies U.S. Women's Open
A lot has happened for Meghan Stasi since she last competed in the U.S. Women's Open in 2007, such as winning a second U.S. Women's Amateur championship, making the 2008 Curtis Cup team and qualifying for her second Women's Open.
And she got married in February to Fort Lauderdale restaurant owner Danny Stasi, who will caddie for her at the Women's Open, which starts today at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
"I'll let you know in a few days how he did," Stasi, who competed as Meghan Bolger until her marriage, said with a laugh yesterday after a practice round.
The 31-year-old Stasi, a former Voorhees resident who now lives in Oakland Park, Fla., qualified for the Women's Open last month in Bryan, Texas. Two years ago at Pine Needles in Southern Pines, N.C., she missed the Women's Open cut after rounds of 81 and 75.
"To be close to home and playing the second one, it feels more comfortable than the first time around," she said. "The first one was a great experience, so I'm glad to be back."
Stasi had never played Saucon Valley until last week. She said the most important aspect of her game for the championship will be to keep the ball in the fairway, which she called "a huge advantage" considering the thickness of the rough.
She will be in the first group to tee off this morning with a couple of prestigious and long-hitting playing partners - former Open champion Laura Davies, who is playing on a special exemption, and five-time LPGA Tour winner Brandie Burton.
"I can't wait," she said. "Since we're the first group off, we're joking we're going to be on the leader board for the first few holes. It's an honor to be playing with both of them. You grow up watching them, so it's fun to be able to see that and appreciate the level of golf they still continue to play."
Stasi said her schedule between April and October included 18 tournaments, one being the Broward County (Fla.) amateur championship, which she won. Her busy summer continues next week at the North and South Amateur in Pinehurst, N.C.
And next week, she'll have a different caddie - her father, Mike.
"They're just taking turns," she said.
Tiger's tickets. Now that we know that Tiger Woods will wear two hats - tournament host and defending champion - in next year's AT&T National at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, it's worth knowing that weekly tickets are on sale.
A weekly ticket book, worth $200, offers admission to the event for six days (June 29 and 30 practice rounds, July 1-4 tournament dates). The Jefferson Club Badge, costing $350, allows holders into a private hospitality area inside the clubhouse.
A spokeswoman for the Tiger Woods Foundation said daily tickets would be available for sale soon.

Women's week. The 112th Philadelphia Women's Championship, conducted by the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia, begins Monday at Gulph Mills Golf Club with 18 holes of stroke-play qualifying.
Whitford's Laura Ladden, who is seeking her eighth championship and fourth in a row, leads the field of 60 players that includes 11-time champion Ann Laughlin of Riverton and Gulph Mills' Alexandra Frazier.
Also next week, White Manor Country Club in Malvern hosts the 22d annual McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship with a field that features 17 junior all-Americans from the American Junior Golf Association. The 54-hole event runs Tuesday through Thursday.
Defending champion Jessica Korda of the Czech Republic will be back to defend her championship in a field that includes Victoria Tanco of Argentina, last year's AJGA player of the year. Both players, who now live in Bradenton, Fla., are competing this week at the U.S. Women's Open.
Christine Shimel, the 2008 PIAA girls' champion at Kennett High School, also is scheduled to be in the field.
Local entries. Michael Brown of Cheltenham, winner of the 2009 Golf Association of Philadelphia Middle Amateur Championship, and Thomas Timby of Doylestown will compete in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship beginning Monday at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
