Johnson captures first tour victory

MILWAUKEE - Richard S. Johnson birdied three of his last four holes to shoot a 6-under-par 64 yesterday and win the U.S. Bank Championship for his first PGA Tour victory.

Johnson finished at 16-under 264 on the 6,759-yard Brown Deer Park Golf Course. He is the sixth golfer from Sweden to win on tour and seventh first-time winner this year.

Johnson, the first-round leader after shooting a 63, sank a birdie putt of about 12 feet on the par-4 17th hole to break a tie with Ken Duke at 14 under. He then birdied the par-5 18th from less than two feet.

"It all started out with that first day. I made that hole in one, and all of a sudden I felt like I could make some birdies. I haven't had that feeling for a while," said Johnson, who had struggled the last few years on tour.

He needed that final birdie yesterday to win because Duke, playing in his threesome, also birdied the last hole.

Duke shot 65 to finish second at 15 under.

Dean Wilson (65), Chad Campbell (65) and Chris Riley (66) tied for third at 13 under.

LPGA Tour

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Ji Young Oh won the State Farm Classic, making a birdie on the first playoff hole to beat Yani Tseng.

Oh, a second-year pro from South Korea, chipped from the rough within six inches of the pin on the par-4 18th hole at Panther Creek Country Club. She then tapped in for the victory.

The 20-year-old Oh, who spoke English with reporters for much of the tournament, resorted to an interpreter after the playoff because she said she was floored by the win.

"I would love to do this interview in English," she said through the interpreter, "but my mind is totally blank."

Tseng entered yesterday in first place. She bogeyed the 18th hole at the end of regulation and bogeyed the hole again in the playoff. Oh and Tseng entered regulation at 18-under par.

Michelle Wie was disqualified from the tournament Saturday while in second place. She failed to sign her scorecard at the end of Friday's round.

Champions Tour

BLAINE, Minn. - R.W. Eaks was the runaway winner in the 3M Championship, posting the lowest score in the tournament's 16-year history.

Eaks shot a 7-under 65 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 193, 4 shots better than Ed Dougherty's finish in 2000. Gary Hallberg and Bernhard Langer tied for second at 17-under 199 for the tournament at the TPC Twin Cities.
