You could handicap thousands of races and not see one similar to this afternoon's $250,000 Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park.
Formerly contested on the turf, the stamina test on the main track provides an automatic invitation for the winner to compete in the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Dirt Marathon at Santa Anita on Oct. 25.
The Greenwood, with a field of six, is the equine version of the tortoise and the hare.
Evening Attire, a 10-year-old gray gelding who appears lighter each year, will play the role of the tortoise.
The $2.8 million earner trained by Pat Kelly Jr. tends to walk out of the gate then drop far behind his rivals before trying to wear them down in the stretch.
Jose Espinoza will ride.
Evening Attire has captured 14 of 68 starts and was the runner-up in the Grade II Brooklyn Handicap at the 11/2-mile Greenwood distance at Belmont Park on June 6.
He is the only member of today's field to ever attempt the distance, with a pair of runner-up finishes.
Barcola will play the part of the hare for trainer Mark Hennig.
Nearly always on the lead with exceptional speed, Barcola set the pace to the stretch against the magnificent Curlin in the Stephen Foster (Grade I) Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 14, holding on valiantly to finish third.
Barcola has scored up to 13/16 miles and certainly figures to be difficult to catch with the softer early fractions under Kendrick Carmouche.
Three in the Bag is another Greenwood threat, having taken his last two starts by a combined 241/4 lengths under Mario Pino for trainer Tony Dutrow.
Phil the Power should love the distance, according to his trainer, Joe Orseno.
Solemn Promise and Bureaucratic complete the field.
Rich in a hurry. Today's 60-minute Pick Six has a $67,440 carryover pool and begins with the sixth race at Belmont Park with a 3:40 p.m. post time.
The seventh race from Monmouth Park is next, followed by the eighth race from Delaware Park, the ninth race from Philadelphia Park, the seventh race from Belmont, and finally the 10th race from Philly Park.
Haskell update. The $1 million Haskell Invitational, slated for Aug. 3 at Monmouth Park, features the return of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown.
The colt was eased up and finished last in the Belmont Stakes, and trainer Rick Dutrow soon afterward targeted the Haskell for his colt's rebound.
Though 33 horses were invited, five are considered likely starters. They include Long Branch winner Truth Rules, Atoned, Cool Coal Man, Tale of Ekati, and Nistle's Crunch.
Trainer Todd Pletcher, who saddled the last two Haskell winners in Bluegrass Cat and Any Given Saturday, will try to make it three in a row with Atoned.
Delaware contest. The Stanton track offers its monthly handicapping tournament today with a $3,000 first prize and a paid trip and entry into the Horseplayer World Series in January at the Orleans in Las Vegas.
There is a $40 entry fee and a $100 bankroll. Entries will be taken beginning at 10 a.m.
Track openings. Del Mar began its much-anticipated meeting near San Diego this week, and on Wednesday Saratoga will open its ancient doors. The first meet was contested during the Civil War.
The Spa meeting is packed with graded stakes and will run through Sept. 1.
Smarty Jones' baby. Me You and Her, a juvenile daughter of 2004 local star Smarty Jones, debuts today in the third race at Monmouth.
The filly is trained by Pletcher and will be ridden by Joe Bravo.
Meadowlands Pace. Badlands Nitro, who has earned $867,488 this year for owner John Celii of Chadds Ford, Chester County, is the 6-1 second choice behind the prohibitive 2-5 favorite Somebeachsomewhere in tonight's $1.1 million Meadowlands Pace.
