Tiger wins U.S. Open playoff in sudden death on 19th hole
At the par 5, 612-yard 9th, Tiger hit his driver 325 yards in the fairway. His second shot, a 5-wood, came up short of the green, in one of two front bunkers. His blast shot didn't reach the green, hanging up in the rough around the collar of the green. On his fourth shot, Tiger hit a wedge to 5 feet and made the putt to save par and remain even par 35 through nine holes.
At the par 4, 414-yard 10th, a slight dogleg left, Tiger misses fairway right. He then hacks his second shot out of the rough to the edge of the rough. His third shot, a wedge, spins off green to the fringe but sinks a clutch par-saving 18-foot putt.
Rocco hits the fairway but his second shot comes up short of green. He chunks his chip shot to 8 feet and misses a par-saving putt to go plus 3 through 10.
At the par 3, 221-yard 11th, Tiger hits 5 iron to the front bunker, then blasts to 8 feet, leaving a slightly downhill putt. But he comes up inches short, for bogey.
Rocco hits a 4 iron to the green and two-putts for par, making up a shot to remain at plus 2.
At the par 4, 475-yard 12th, Tiger hit his driver into the right fairway bunker. He blasted out to the rough just short of the green. He pitched to 15 feet but ran his par putt 3 feet past the hole for a bogey 5 to go plus 2.
Rocco hit his driver in the fairway and hit a great fairway wood to the green, 18 feet away from the hole. His birdie putt ran 4 feet past the hole but he saved par to trail by only one.
At the par 5, 539-yard 13th, Tiger hit his driver 315 yards into second cut of left rough. From a good lie, he hits a long iron from 225 yards, which lands on green and rolls to back edge, setting up a long eagle putt. He comes up 2 feet short but makes the birdie to go to 1-over for the round.
Rocco hits his driver to left edge of fairway, then goes for the green with a fairway wood; which comes up just short. It catches the rim of front greenside bunker and falls back in. He blasts to 4 feet and sinks the birdie putt to stay within one shot.
At the par 4, 269-yard 14th, Tiger hits his driver to the rough, just short of green. He chips to 7 feet on his second shot, but lips out the putt to save par.
Rocco hits his driver and almost reaches the green. He chips to tap-in range for his second straight birdie and a tie. Through 14 holes, they are all even at plus 1.
At the par 4, 470-yard 15th, Tiger hits driver and flinches for the first time all day, apparently bothered by his knee. His tee shot sails 40 yards into the fairway bunker on the adjoining hole. He hits a world-class bunker shot to green to 8 feet but misses birdie putt.
Rocco hits driver to right side of fairway and his second shot to 15 feet. Thousands of fans erupt as Rocco's birdie putt trickles into the hole for a birdie 3 to go even par and a one-shot lead after 15 holes.
At the par 3, 225-yard 16th, Tiger's tee shot makes the front edge of green, leaving a 30-foot birdie putt. The stroke seems true but the putt comes up just short, hanging on the lip.
Rocco's tee shot comes up just short of the green, on the fringe. From 5 feet off the green, he lag putts to 2 feet. Taps in for par.
At the par 4, 441-yard 17th, Tiger hits a fairway wood 279 yards to center of the fairway, leaving 162 yards to the green. His second shot finishes 18 feet past the hole but his birdie putt comes up just short.
Rocco's tee shot catches the first cut of the right rough, leaving 154 yards to the hole. His second shot makes the front of the green, leaving a 50-foot birdie putt. he lags to 3 feet past hole and sinks the par putt.
On the par 5, 525-yard 18th, Tiger hits driver 308 yards to center of fairway, leaving 217 yards to the hole. With a long iron in his hang, he backs off second shot once, then settles in to hit it. His towering iron shot just clears pond in front of the green, leaving 40-foot eagle putt. He lags to 4 feet.
