Flyers' Shayne Gostisbehere can relate to Carson Wentz' injury

Three years ago, Gostisbehere underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL. Wentz is expected to have the same doctor.

Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere can sympathize with injured Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.

Three years ago, the player they call "Ghost," underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Wentz will have similar season-ending surgery and is expected to have the same doctor who operated on Gostisbehere, Peter DeLuca.

"It was definitely the worst injury I've ever been through," Gostisbhere said after the Flyers' practice Monday in Voorhees. "You know it's going to be a long-term injury, so it weighs on you mentally. Obviously I saw [Wentz' injury] and I hope for the best for him. I mean, the rehab is really grueling. It's ups and downs. Some days you're going to feel great and feel like you're ahead of the game, and other days you're going to feel like you're never going to get better."

About a year after his surgery, Gostisbehere joined the Flyers and had a sensational rookie season, collecting 17 goals and 46 points in 64 games.

"Overall, he's going to gave the best care in the world," Gostisbehere said. "He's going to have the best doctor in Dr. DeLuca, so obviously you hope for the best and hopefully it's not that bad."

Gostisbehere said if Wentz wanted him to reach out to him, he would be receptive. "Mine was about three years ago, and I think technology has come a little ways [since then]," he said. "But if he ever wanted to talk to me, I'd love to talk to him."

Elliott honored by NHL

Goalie Brian Elliott was named the NHL's third star of the week after leading the Flyers to three straight wins on a Western Canada trip. Former Flyer Brayden Schenn, now starring for St. Louis, was named the No. 1 star.

Elliott had a 1.67 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage as he sparked the Flyers to wins in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver.

"It's great when you're recognized. … It shows how the group is playing," Elliott, 32, said. "It's my name up there, but the Philadelphia Flyers team deserves all that."

He has a 9-6-6 record, a 2.79 GAA, and a .912 save percentage for the season. On Tuesday against visiting Toronto, Elliott will make his fifth straight start and his eighth in the last nine games.

Schenn, 26, led the NHL with six goals during the week. He entered Monday fifth in the NHL with 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) in 31 games and he led the NHL in game-winning goals (sixth, tied for No. 1) and with a plus-25 rating.

Breakaways

Radko Gudas has served his 10-game suspension and will return to the lineup Tuesday. He will be paired with Travis Sanheim. Mark Alt is expected to be a healthy scratch. … Jori Lehtera was ill and missed Monday's practice.
