Briere suffers concussion; Jagr injured again
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
NEWARK, N.J. - For the Flyers, the all-star break cannot come fast enough.
Center Danny Briere suffered a concussion in the Flyers' 4-1 win in New Jersey Saturday and is out indefinitely.
The 5-foot-10, 179-pound Briere was sent to the ice three times by 6-1, 225-pound defenseman Anton Volchenkov during the game.
Late in the first period, the diminutive Briere was flattened by Volchenkov. With 12 minutes, 44 seconds left in the game, Volchenkov cross-checked Briere and sent him falling face-first onto the ice. Briere also was punched in the face by Patrik Elias late in the third period, and he took a high-stick to the face from Brad Mills shortly thereafter, with 1 minute, 46 seconds remaining.
With 1:10 left, Briere absorbed a hard check from Volchenkov, who lowered his shoulder into the center and smashed him into the boards.
After the game, Briere looked dazed, and he said he did not know which hit caused the concussion.
Briere is the sixth Flyer to have a concussion this season, following Chris Pronger, Brayden Schenn, Matt Read, Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk.
Veteran right winger Jaromir Jagr re-aggravated a groin injury in the first period and did not return to the game. He is expected to miss the final two games before the all-star break.
Jagr, who will turn 40 next month, played just four shifts that totaled 3:12. He has missed six games this season because of two different groin issues.
In addition, Zac Rinaldo suffered an upper-body injury in the game and is day to day.
After the game, the Flyers recalled Tom Sestito and Ben Holmstrom from the AHL Phantoms.
Brayden Schenn (four points in 17 games) replaced Jagr on a line with Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell.
In 40 games, Jagr has 34 points, including 12 goals. He said earlier this week he would like to play with the Flyers next season.

- Hockey players move with much more speed. And get plowed into walls to boot. Football impact is different. icarus
- Mozes37, there's research looking into a tightening collar around the neck, that would reduce the flow of blood in the outlet vein of the brain, its suppose to help reduce the mouvement of the brain banging against the skull by retaining more blood around the brain. Its basically working like a seat belt in a car,and there having positive results with rats,no not the River Rats of the AHL but in a laboratory.
mean mean pride,mean mean pride.
What they need to do is take away the big elbow and shoulder pads from ALL players.....if there is minimal protection there, players won't drive their shoulders and elbows into guys heads or try to crush guys into the glass every minute of the game. When you are padded so well that nothing hurts you, you throw yourself around the ice like a crazy man.....and you have to make it automatic that any player who makes contact to the head in any way is automatically ejected. Even accidental hits where someone like Chara who is 3 ft taller than Briere gets tossed unless he bends down and makes a check on some other part of Briere's body. No more just standing there and taking a players head off because you are 3 ft taller than them.....players would have to learn to check clean again, just like the "D" in the NFL is having to learn to tackle using there arms again. Simple solution. Mark1npt
And I'm sure Jagr told lavi he was ready....problem is, jagr has long term chronic damage to that groin...it'll never be right until he retires....sooner or later, HOF'er or not, all players bodies abandon them, no matter how much they still want to play...like Forsberg...now Jagr. Mark1npt- We have the answer to having Jagr back next year: No. Even with his skill and conditioning his groin is obviously not up to the rigors of the NHL. He wasn't even hit. Can't afford part-time players at this level. Giroux and Hartnell looked much better without him as the game went on. icarus
This trend of concussions, hmmm, could it be the refs letting the boys play? Maybe they had better start looking at how the hits are coming down. There needs to be an off ice official watching for the hits that are causing all of these great players to lose time. Pronger was hit with a high stick in the eye. No penalty. Briere nailed 3 times in one game. No penalty? Crosby and other great players not playing diminishes the game. The league needs to do something. skolman
Have no fear philly fans!!!! Luckily our management already foreseen the issue of injuries haunting us this year! Thats why in the offseason they traded for and spent OVER FIFTY ONE MILLION DOLLARS on our savior/goalie soft bryz! Oh yes, old softy was brought here to steal us the 1-0, 2-1 games that Bobs and Boosh couldnt last year. Bryz was our missing piece in the playoffs last year they told us. Just think off how far we could have gone with old softy in net vs Boston instead of Boosh and Bobs. Now think of the 2012 playoffs with Bryz in net. The difference is??? Well 51.6 millions dollars of course! coreym1945
