TAMPA - Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, who has been criticized for the team's tumble, is not in danger of losing his job, according to a source close to the situation.
"Look at his body of work. He's done a very good job," said the source. "He's not going anywhere."
The Flyers are 13-15-1 and 11th in the Eastern Conference. They play at Tampa Bay (12-15-1) on Monday night in a battle of scuffling teams.
Timonen to be honored. Kimmo Timonen will play his 1,000 career game on Monday, and the Flyers will honor him before their March 26 home game against the New York Rangers.
Breakaways. Tampa Bay has six rookies in its lineup.......Ilya Bryzglaov (2.78 GAA, .899 save percentage) will face the Lightning's Anders Lindback (2.93, .902).....After Monday's game, the Flyers won't play again until Sunday in Pittsburgh......Jake Voracek, who leads the Flyers with 31 points, has 21 points, including 10 goals, in his last 14 games.....The Flyers' mission Monday: shutting down the line of Steven Stamkos (20 goals, 38 points), Martin St. Louis (37 points, 30 assists) and Teddy Purcell (23 points). ...Former Flyer Matt Carle, who has 10 points for the Lightning, called Monday's game "huge for both teams."...The Flyers, who have just two even-strength goals in the last 14 periods, will use the same lines as in their 2-1 SO win over New Jersey on Friday....The Flyers' PP is 0 for 8 against Tampa this season.

Wait, that's the entire article? element_104
you have to understand....a. sometimes gm's are going to make deals that don't work out...not all of us make perfect decisions all the time, and b. Snider was no doubt a part of the Bryzgalov signing and the Carter and Richards trades. So he's not canning Holmgren for these moves.
I guess this is a tabloid. I can hardly remember a day when there's not an article talking about some coach being on the hot seat or about to be fired. If you followed the preseason postures of Holmgren one could almost expect a non contender when neither Weber or Suter signed. At least I didn't. Such an impatient, controversy hungry city. retzlaff- impatient! 37 years and counting. one title in this city since 1983.
kdub13 - You have the local morning "sports" radio hosts constantly calling for a coach or high-profile player to be fired/traded/released, and it builds from there. Going back to Rich Kotite, I don't thnk there has been a month in the last 20 years when Cataldi and his crew of baboons haven't been trying to run somebody out of town (McNabb, Vick, Manuel, Bowa, Iverson, Iguodala, etc.) Maybe not so much hockey, just because they don't really care. 1980
He's still responsible for the Bobrovski trade. Look how well he's doing in Columbs. NHLnet said he was buried in Philly, now he's starting to shine. I fail to understand why we don't develop a goaltender from the start. Excellent chance with Bob but they put all their cards (and money really) on Bryz, who is good but inconsistent. Any elite goaltender is consistent and good every night. They won't stop every shot every night, but they'll make you earn the goals. ena1977
DO you call Prongers trade a success? What do you say about going to SC finals with Boucher and Leighton? What about going into playoffs with Boucher and Bobrovsky and Leighton?
How do you define success? Is it getting close to SC or winning it? I personally think Pronger does not know how to manage cap room.
Nitroglycerin- (I imagine you mean Homer doesn't know how to manage cap room.) I don't think that's an issue. There's an owner who over time has wished bad contracts to the corn field (the minors and off their cap figure) as if it were a bodily function.
Your goal of defining "success" depends on the context. Financially, they clearly are self-sustaining. On the ice, they put together competitive teams nearly every single year. This current iteration of the team is about as close to rebuilding as they've come, which is to say they don't believe in it. It's tough to judge a team on playoff success because it involves such a small sample size. You play 82 games (in a full season) then have your fate boiled down to having to win 4 out of 7 in order to avoid going home. Professional sports playoffs are the very definition of combining some management skill with a whole lot of luck.
I think their current problem has to do with some unfortunate luck combined with bad play at the wrong time (something like 1-6 when tied after two periods), in addition to what might be a scheme issue. This club is breaking down defensively all the time, and it's not just on the players. sklandog
Of course he is secure he is part of the Good Old Boy Network of Ex Flyers....We certainly wouldnt want to have any objective non Flyer people around would we...Part of the problem with the organization loyal to a fault flyers1000- If you're implying that the presence of a former Flyer in the GM's box is impacting the product on the ice, I think you're guilty of sticking with the old narrative. The speed and style of the game had clearly passed Clarke by when he was at the end (in hindsight, signing guys like Rathje and Hatcher was like walking when everyone else was driving). I don't see that with Homer.

Only in Philadelphia -- and I'm dead serious when I say that -- would someone with Paul Holmgren's track record even be questioned. Only in Philadelphia would a GM who has never missed the playoffs and, in the last three years has a Stanley Cup finals appearance and two 100-point seasons, be questioned about his competence.
The Flyers under Paul Holmgren:
2007–08 42-29-11 (95 points); Eastern Conference finals
2008–09 44-27-11 (99 points); Lost in first round
2009–10 41-35-6 (88 points); Stanley Cup finalist
2010–11 47-23-12 (106 points); Atlantic Division champion
2011–12 47-26-9 (103 points); Lost in second round
If they miss the playoffs this year, it would be the first time the Flyers have missed under Paul Holmgren. It would easily be the single stupidest move I've seen called for by one of the most clueless fanbases in sports. These are the good times, people -- the Flyers have been to the finals more recently than the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.
But only in Philadelphia does the fanbase want to fire the GM -- before the season is even done. That's why this city is looked at the way it is from the outside: Like a bunch of clowns who can't recognize a good thing when it's standing right in front of them. FlyerBacker88
the team has absolutely no heart, every team in the league has a bonafide heavyweight, poor rinaldo can't do it all, count on a rematch tonite with crombeen and rinaldo phil di
To my point: Nicklas Lidstrom retired from the Detroit Red Wings, and now the Red Wings are struggling a bit, which is predictable. The Red Wings' GM, Ken Holland, was unable to sign Ryan Suter as a replacement, just as the Flyers were unable to sign Ryan Suter as a replacement for Chris Pronger, who is no longer able to play.
Both teams are attempting to fill a huge hole on its roster. But only one team's fanbase wants to fire its GM because of the struggles of the team as it attempts to replace their captain and best defenseman.
Which fanbase do you think that is? Of course, we all know the answer to that question. FlyerBacker88- hasn't ken holland gotten the wings to six finals appearances and four cups since 1995? i'm not in favor of firing holmgren yet, but you have to think it's coming eventually.

Oh stop with the one title in '83 years standard. The press and fans were at their obnoxious best in '68, the year after the Sixers title, and in '62 just two years after the Eagles championship. Rudeness and impatience of philly phans has nothing to do with title droughts. It's the collective personality of a loud minority of fans. Okay no titles. If that were all sports watching was about, then nobody'd be watching and nobody would be exhibiting the daily fixation to this wonderful escape on message boards. retzlaff
Holland was only the Assistant GM in 1997. Yes, he has won the Cups since 1998, and obviously, he gets credit for those...but at the same time, how does anyone know that if Paul Holmgren is the GM for 16 years, he won't win three Cups? He's clearly capable of building 100-point teams, teams that can win in the playoffs. They've only failed to win a playoff round ONCE in Holmgren's tenure! ONCE!
The worst representatives of this fanbase are ready to fire a man who has never missed the playoffs! Who got this team younger and, due to Chris Pronger's injury, has to try to obtain a top-pair defenseman for the second time in four years -- without the benefit of tanking, like the Penguins do whenever their team goes bad.
It's ridiculous to hear the way this fanbase talks about Paul Holmgren -- it really is. It's the most ignorant conversation out there in hockey right now -- fire a successful GM in a short season, AFTER Shea Weber SIGNED THE OFFER SHEET TO COME TO PHILADELPHIA.
Only in Philadelphia would people want Paul Holmgren fired. That's the ugly truth this city -- Retzlaff is totally correct. FlyerBacker88
