Sestito out 6-8 weeks

POSTED: Friday, February 17, 2012, 3:31 PM

Shaking his hand and grimacing as he left the ice on Thursday night after fisticuffs with Buffalo’s Zack Kassian, the general consensus was that forward Tom Sestito busted up his hand or wrist in the fight.

Sestito, as the Flyers announced minutes later, would miss the rest of the game with a lower-body injury.

Does the hand count as a “lower-body” injury?

Turns out, it’s a little more serious than that.

Sestito, 24, will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks with surgery to repair a torn groin muscle. The surgery will be performed on Tuesday.

Sestito has played in just 14 games this season but has racked up 83 minutes in penalties, mostly through fighting majors. Over the last few weeks, however, Peter Laviolette had chosen Sestito’s size over a player like Harry Zolnierczyk’s speed.

Sestito was acquired around this time last year – on Feb. 28 – in a minor deadline trade with Columbus in exchange for prospects Greg Moore and Michael Chaput.

JAGR BACK? Flyers forward Jaromir Jagr skated in practice on Friday, but clearly wasn’t feeling himself. When he left the ice, he immediately went to the players’ lounge in his full equipment (somewhat of a rarity) and said he sat down to drink hot tea.

Jagr missed practice on Tuesday and Wednesday and also skipped Thursday’s win over Buffalo with a flu bug that has apparently caught the coach, as well.

It appears, though, that Jagr will be healthy enough to play on Saturday against Pittsburgh.

“Anybody who can walk, plays,” Jagr said.

He then threw in a barb about his age. Jagr, of course, turned 40 on Wednesday.

“Did I turn 50 this week or 40?” Jagr asked. “Because I feel like I’m 50 today.”

Before the pre-game skate, Jag needs to take that Five-Hour Energy Drink.

Jagr needsto get completely over the flu before playing and I feel bad for Sestito to get hurt like that during thefight hewas winning hands down really sucks as the injury cost him a clean cut victory last night. Hope everything goes well with surgery and he gets back with in the time frame.

I agree, Jagr looks very very slow out there. Pretty sure this will be a one and done type deal for him. Definately seems like a changed man but you cant beat father time.

Sestito is a younger version of Shelley. Has the heart & will to fight, but never seems to win.

Sestito has won more then he has lost, and Shelley never fights.

Flyers fans knew Rupper was right in 24/7... #45 is irrelevant, period. Sestito has a much better presence on the ice, and has more sense about him if/when he touches the puck.

I really hope we see more of Harry Z when Zac is done with his timeout.

Hey Frankie - saw your coverage from Thursday night's game. Stick to writing bud, that camera ain't doing you any favors.

Philly, I know we are all busy creaming ourselves over the Phils and Iggles, but seriously - CAN WE GET A REAL REPORTER ON OUR FLYERS BEAT?

Sestito won't be missed. Worst player on the team.

Sestito is a physical player but he doesn't really intimidate anyone & he's aggressive at the wrong times/takes some stupid penalties. Isn't a good defensive player either or do enough work in his own end forechecking. He's better than Shelley but that really isn't a complement.

Sestito is a fine compromise for people who still want Old Time Hockey in the 2012 version of the NHL. Sestito can skate pretty well for someone 6'5". It has been very entertaining watching him play this season and it is a tough break he tore his groin. With JVR and Jagr coming back I am not sure how much longer he would have been in the lineup anyway. I hope they put Shelley back in and he plays tough in what probably will be his last season.

hope Lavy rips the team BEFORE the first period instead of AFTER, maybe he can avoid the 2+ goal hole they like to dig themselves in these matinee games.
