Matt Duchene agrees to five-year contract extension with Avalanche
The two sides have agreed to a five-year extension that will keep the 22-year-old forward under contract until the completion of the 2018-19 season. Duchene had one-year remaining on a two-year, $7 million contract that accounted for $3.5 million against the salary cap. He was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next offseason.
Duchene's contract will begin in 2014-15 and will pay the forward $30 million, according to Stephen Whyno of the Canadian Press. That total will carry an annual average value of $6 million.
Duchene was one of eight Colorado players scheduled to become a restricted free agent next offseason, which includes captain Gabriel Landeskog who is entering the final year of his entry-level contract.
