Pronger's severity still unknown

Pronger also did some damage on Wednesday in Montreal, colliding with the Canadiens' Mathieu Darche.

UPDATE (1:45 pm): Confirming a Daily News report, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released a statement today saying Chris Pronger had his right foot X-rayed and underwent a CT scan.

The Flyers have nothing to report at this point.

"Chris will be re-evaluated [Friday] morning by a foot and ankle specialist and at that time, we will have a better idea of what we are dealing with," Holmgren said.

MONTREAL -- The term “lower body” in hockey can be a scary thing.

Especially when it involves Chris Pronger, who helped carry the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final last year as team MVP.

Lower body can cover anything from groin, hip, lower back to hamstring, knee, and foot.

For Pronger, 36, the first thought of most when he didn’t return to last night’s win in Montreal in the third period with what the Flyers called a “lower body” injury was Pronger’s knee.

Pronger, of course, missed all of training camp and the first two games of the season after his knee surgery in late July.

Fear not, Flyers fans: Pronger’s knee was apparently not impacted on Wednesday night - even though Pronger admits he has never been at 100 percent this season.

Pronger missed the third period after taking a shot to the foot late in the second period. Pronger played the final 53 seconds of the second period and did not return for the third. He played a total of 15:54 over two periods.

The video replays do not show a clear or noticeable shot to the foot.

Unfortunately, all we know for now is that it’s his foot. We have no idea as to the severity, if there is a fracture or any pain or swelling.

Even Pronger did not know the severity of his foot injury last night, as he declined to speak to the media frenzy that is Montreal after the game.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said through a team spokesman that Pronger will be evaluated today in Philadelphia.

If Pronger, a 6-time All-Star, 2-time Olympic gold medalist and Stanley Cup winner, is not available to play on Saturday when the Rangers visit, the Flyers would likely turn to Oskars Bartulis. Bartulis has played just three games this season - Oct. 7 in Pittsburgh, Oct. 9 in St. Louis and Nov. 1 vs. Carolina.

You can bet that even if the Flyers don’t practice on Thursday at the Skate Zone, coming off back-to-back games, that Bartulis will be on the ice. Just in case.

If Pronger has not been 100% so far this year, why is he playing!! I said it before and I'll say it again, he should of sat out and started his season around now or Jan. to be sure he is 100% for the stretch and playoffs.

Trashman (How Appropo!), The guy is a leading vote getter for the all-star team and is second on the team in minutes. Less than a 100% for him is better than 95% of his peers.
Since he is signed long term, I go with caution, but he has not been a liability and conditioning (especially at his age) is as critical as being injury free.
I think that you are wrong but merely misguided by SC greed.

If this foot injury isn't serios, this may be a blessing. Any chance to get Pronger off the ice and some rest is a good thing. Think April-May-June.

Team has a long holiday break coming up after the two games over the weekend (NYR and Florida, hopefully two wins with or without him). Pronger should probably take these two off and, hopefully be ready to go for a huge matchup @ Vancouver on the 28th.

With Meszaros and O'Donnell being so effective, this injury is not crippling ( no pun intended ) to the team. I hope this is only something minor, but knowing Pronger's tolerance for pain, the fact that his knees are beyond full repair now, and that he is still effective with pain, it must be worrisome if he missed a game. We won at the beginning of the season without him, we will keep winning. Go Flyers!!

he's fine. small hairline fracture. two to three weeks - which means with the winter break he will only miss 6-7 games at the most

If Pronger has to take a little time off, this is where the Flyers' quality depth kicks in. Our "3rd" D pairing would be the 1st pairing for a lot of teams.

There's no doubt it's broken....the real question is, does he need surgery or not and how much time will each option cause him to miss......that's the only reason for seeing the specialist tomorrow. On the brighter side, this may be just the thing his 55 yo knee needs to make it thru the rest of the season....a little reprieve now. He's fast heading down the same road as Darien Hatcher....he'll need an artificial knee before his playing days are done.....good thing we don't owe him much the last couple of years of that contract.

let him sit for a while and heal up. We need him 100% in the spring, not 75% in the winter.

Chris at 80% is more effective than most. His intelligence and physical play will be key for the push to the Cup. He needs to get back to 100%.
