Sam Morin, Mike Vecchione to debut for Flyers Tuesday night

The Flyers are starting their 2017-18 season early. Defenseman Sam Morin and center Mike Vecchione will both make their NHL debuts Tuesday night against New Jersey.

Morin will be paired with Shayne Gostisbehere, while Vecchione will center a line with wingers Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Colin McDonald.

Coach Dave Hakstol had originally planned to wait until Saturday afternoon to play Vecchione. But after looking at Vecchione's schedule - he will be in Chicago for the Hobey Baker ceremony on Friday night - he decided to put him in the lineup Tuesday night.

Vecchione, 24, signed as a free agent last week, will likely sit out Saturday and play Sunday. He starred for four years at Union and was one of the most sought-after free agents in college hockey.

"It's every little kid's dream to play in the NHL," he said. "I don't think it's sunk in yet. Probably when I'm out there for my first shift or put on my jersey and get ready for warm-ups (it'll hit him). Im just trying to stay focused and not let the biggest stage get the best of me. Just go out there and have some fun."

Vecchione said there were a couple nuetral-zone system adjustments he has had to learn, but that the rest of the Flyers' system is similar to what he used at Union College.

"I just want to go out there and play my game and enjoy it," he said.

Morin, 21,was recalled from Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. The 6-7 defenseman will also be used on the penalty kill Tuesday, Hakstol said. He will give the Flyers' D some much-needed snarl.

Hakstol was asked what advice he would give Morin and Vecchione.

"They really have to go out there and play their game," he said. "I know that's a real old adage, but they've got a good group of veterans around them. You look at Veccs tonight, he's got good veterans in and around him. Keep the game fairly simple. Two or three little points that we gave him beyond the basic systems and beyond that, just go out and play with confidence and play the game and be strong in the areas that you've always been strong in."

The Morin-Gostisbehere duo is "a pair that makes sense, a puck-mover and a good, two-way defender," Hakstol said.

Morin has "got to go and play the way he plays," Hakstol said. "We have two, good two-way defensemen that are out of the lineup" -- Brandon Manning and Radko Gudas are injured. "That's the perfect opportunity for Sam to come in and play his game. His game, it's a heavy, two-way game. Coming out of our zone, simple puck movement and just trying to play that solid, 200-foot game. That 's what we want him to do and that's what we want him to play. Nothing specific to our opponent."

Steve Mason will start in goal. Mason is 0-9 in his career gainst the Devils.

Chris VandeVelde was going to be a healthy scratch for the second time in two seasons, but Jordan Weal became ill. VandeVelde is now in the lineup.

The Flyers, eliminated from playoff contention Sunday, have three games left.

In anothe matter, Flyers prospect Geman Rubtsov, a center who was their No. 1 pick last June, will be shut down for the rest of his junior season with an injury.
