Parent signs 2-year deal with Nashville

POSTED: Monday, July 26, 2010, 4:25 PM

Former Flyers defenseman Ryan Parent has signed a 2-year, $1.85 million contract with the Nashville Predators.

Parent was sent back to Nashville in June in exchange for the rights to Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick.

Hamhuis could not agree to terms with the Flyers shortly after the deal and was flipped to Pittsburgh during the NHL draft for a 2011 third-round pick. When Hamhuis and Pittsburgh could not reach a contract he became an unrestricted free agent and eventually signed with Vancouver.

Parent initally joined the Flyers from Nashville in the Peter Forsberg trade in 2007. Parent struggled with injuries and had three points and 20 penalty minutes in 48 games last season.

I realize he had some injury issues, but think we gave up on this kid way to early. If and a big if, he stayed healthy he's a better cheaper option than what Hommer has been stockpiling....

While it's a shame the Flyers couldn't cow to terms with Hamhius, Parent was a liability. The one thing he had in common with greatness, was the spelling of his last name...

Parent was a good skater and was capable of making a crisp, first pass out of the zone. The Flyers gave up on him, I think, because his game didn't develop in the corners and in front of the net. He was a horrifying liability as this past season's playoffs progressed. Had he learned to be stronger on the puck, and his body developed in a way to support this kind of play, he'd still be on the roster. He's much better suited to the Western Conference IMHO.

How did I forget that Andy Delmore was one of the great ones? His only liability as a D-man was his inability to play defense. When the Flyers traded him to Nashville for a bucket of used pucks it was a fair swap. Last I heard he was in Germany plaing or the Hamburg Tastee Freezes, but I guess he's still in Canada somewhere playing pond hockey.

Hahahahha! Delmore wasn't even great on the point. He had a great 2 weeks in the playoffs ONE season. Parent may or may not develop and make Homer look bad, but if the comparison is he's the next Delmore Homer STOLE a 3rd rd pick from Pit in the eventual 2nd trade that week!

in my opinion, parent had plenty of time to earn a spot. he's been with the club for three years now and just couldn't get it done. in fact, i think his abilities regressed over the past 2 years. he may someday end up being a regular 4th or 5th guy, but who has the patience to wait? and, i must say i do not agree with the assessment that he has a crisp first pass...he did nothing but dump it up the boards when i watched him. usually ending up on an opponents stick. i won't miss him...

$925K per year is exactly the caliber of play we had last year combining both Kracjeck and Parent for ($1.85M). Would much rather have O'Donnell & Walker even though they cost us double. . .it'll be worth it.

Andy Delmore great? I am hoping he was being funny. Parent will be a marginal player. He just isn't that good and Holmgren knew it.

Andy Delmore played for the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) last season.

not that it matters, but given time I think Parent will do more than O.K. in Nashville

Flyers have to much expectations on players. To high for some and are willing to take risks. Parent was ok but not as good as Bartulis. Sending Parent back to Nashville might be best. I thinking getting rid of Sbisa was a bad mistake

beetle, I said he was capable of making a good pass out of the zone. Doesn't mean he did it consistently.

It is so easy to say that getting rid of Sbisa was a bad mistake, but was getting Pronger a bad mistake? Would they have had a chance to win the Stanley Cup last season with Sbisa instead of Pronger? Would their cup chances be the same going in with Sbisa this season? I think not.

totally agree with beetle--I think he got worse or at least alot less confident over time, very tentative with the puck and looked like he never knew where to go with it, often passed it back into his zone where it usually turned into trouble--skated like he was in mud--he certainly had his chances--considering he was pretty highly touted when we got him, very disappointing.

arguments can be made in favor of and opposed to most of the trades that have been made this year! the fact that we still have Carter is my biggest problem... he has the tallent but will be perform... time will tell

WTF - why are people still talking about Sbisa? We got Pronger. Pronger had an awesome year. He played 30 minutes a game, people! Who cares that we got rid of Sbisa. Stop it.

Delcofan is spot on-- Flyers_70, why are you even mentioning Sbisa's name? That guy was nothing special. Anaheim's defense sucked last year, and he could not even make their squad. The guy is average at best and we walked away with Pronger in the deal. You think with Sbisa we were two wins from the Cup last year?

Hah sbisa! Reminds me of the worst first round draft debacle in recent memory. First round pick for Steve Emiger, Trade Umberger for a first round pick.... and then use it on Sbisa. Ha. Two first round picks wasted on losers. I'll take Pronger for first round picks anyday. [yes I'm looking at you JVR- better come to play next year]

Now, he can fall down in Nasville when he goes to check someone, furthermore when he tries to take the puck out of his own zone he could cough it up his team,He should not be playing in the NHL, Ed Van Impe had more offensive skills than this kid. No offense Ryan, just business

Flyers have been good at evaluating defensive talent and not holding on to average blueliners just because they're young (Eaton, Delmore, Meyer, Jones, i.e). However, I wish the same could be said for forwards (Sharp, Park, Prospal, Umberger). I hope they have learned and give guys like JVR the time they need.

gave up too early? the kid is young sure but he hardly played (due to injuries which will probably recur) while here for almost 3 seasons, how long do you want to wait for production? oh yeah, that was cute how he got himself benched in the finals for boneheaded plays... yeah, let's keep wasting our time with him

Parent was terrible, he had two years and proved he belongs on a crappy team in the NHL or a really good AHL team. I am glad Homer got something for him, a third round pick.
