Flyers make moves; a classic Olympic finish

POSTED: Monday, March 1, 2010, 3:03 PM

The Flyers made two moves Monday to free cap space for a possible deal before Wednesday's 3 p.m. trade deadline.

By placing goalie Ray Emery ($1.5 million salary) on the long-term injured list and putting seldom-used winger Riley Cote ($550,000) on waivers, the Flyers cleared a little over $2 million in cap space.

They now have about $2.8 million of space to try to make a deal. They will also get some more room, of course, if they trade a player on the current roster.

An NHL source said the Flyers are interested in a handful of forwards, including Los Angeles' Alexander Frolov, Columbus' Raffi Torres and Ottawa's Matt Cullen.

Sources said Carolina winger Ray Whitney, a potential unrestricted free agent after the season, is seeking a three-year deal for $4 million a season and that it doesn't fit in the Flyers' budget. Whitney played for Flyers coach Peter Laviolette in Carolina.

    Do you believe in miracles…?!
Well, after Zach Parise’s game-tying goal with 24.4 seconds left in regulation Sunday, YES!
But Team USA’s gallant effort ended when Sidney Crosby scored nearly eight minutes into overtime to give Team Canada the gold medal, 3-2, in a thrilling end to the Olympics.
I was boarding a flight to Tampa, where the Flyers will play Tuesday, and didn’t see Crosby’s epic score.
But I was at a crowded Philadelphia International Airport bar _ every seat was filled, and people were lined eight-deep in the walkways as they craned their necks to see the final minutes of regulation on the bar’s tiny TV screens.
When Parise scored on a rebound, the airport echoed with cheers and shrieks of USA….USA…..USA.
The U.S. didn’t win gold, but the spirited young players did America proud. And, based on the reaction at the airport, they created a lot of hockey fans in the process.
As for Team Canada, whose squad included the Flyers’ Chris Pronger and Mike Richards, it deserves wild applause for withstanding the intense pressure _ with a loss, it would have been scorned in its hockey-crazed nation _ and giving its country a memory that will become a part of Olympic lore.
In other words, there were no losers on Sunday.

Great article. I was very proud of our Olympic team and their "team" effort. I was glad it is was such a great game. But... why did it have to be Sidney Crosby. As a Flyer fan it just sealed our fate for years to come.

Judging by the reactions on blogs and such, most Canadians think it was a huge mistake for Team Canada to take Pronger over Mike Green. I would agree.

On Hockey TV announcers: I really think more fans would come if the announcers called the game, and helped the casual viewer to see what was going on, rather than ignoring the game and chatting amongst themselves about where the players live in the off season, how many children they have and what school they went to. Am I the only one that is tired of Eddie Olczyk telling me he told me so about stuff I don't even care about?

jimf, I could not agree more, Eddie O is a prime example that not all ex-players make good announcers.

Chris Pronger had 5 assists and a +3. By the way Canada won the gold. Mike Green is a great offensive threat from the blueline but is more than a liability in his own end

Mike Green is fourth in the league at +28, I'd love to have such a liability on D for the Flyers.

The good news my American friends is that the big three Flyers that participated in the Olympics are coming back with medals. This can only help us down the stretch with coming off a tough tourney with 2 gold and a bronze. Lavi is crazy not to give these guys a day off but hes the coach and I guess he knows best, better not be any injuries. Canada rules, but its Lets go Flyers the rest of the way!
    Fabulous

The game was all that hockey is cabable of being. Announcers are a liability for the most part IMHO because they have lost the ability to let "space" into the broadcast(s). I find myself turing off the sound most games, Olympics included. When they attempted to compare the USA forecheck to rushing the QB in football......For the sake of those who "only tuned in now".....jimf, I am tired of MOST of them. BTW? How many tankers drove through the rink yesterday? What was with the klaxton every other 3 minutes? All in all I'll take half a loaf of bread as opposed to no bread at all. Congrats to th USA coaches, staff, and not least, the Players. Slainte!

Mike Green is +28 because Ovechkin is always on the ice. If you don't admire the defense that Pronger is providing in front of Leighton, you're crazy.

Mike green is +28 because he if so offsensive-minded. Keep in mind, hes the is top D-man on a team that gives up over 3 goals a game...when you have AO semin and backstrom you often win the 5-4 games

I didn't even notice the announcers. I was watching a great game. I read on here so often about play by play and color announcer complaints. Nobody is gonna be able to hit the right balance to make everybody happy. Remember these Olympic hockey announcers are speaking to the lowest common demoninator as there were tons of casual fans not familiar with terms and strategy. Regarding Chris Wheeler, Tom McCarthy (I think), Tim McCarver, et al, who I see griped about constantly on here; shut up already. They all know what they're talking about. Some people just like to complain, I guess.

Also hated the 4 on 4 OT. Wish the Flyers had a couple of the players on Team Canada and/or USA. Corey Perry, Dustin Brown, Eric Johnson, Ryan Suter, Drew Doughty and any of the Black Hawks!!
