For hockey fans, there were mixed signals sent Friday.

The bad news: The highly popular Winter Classic was canceled.

The good news: Representatives from the NHL and the players' union have agreed to meet. Finally.

When they do get together Saturday, it will end a dubious streak: 15 straight days without any face-to-face meetings.

Bill Daly (NHL) and Steve Fehr (NHLPA) are meeting at an undisclosed location, ESPN reported.

There are rumblings that the NHL is prepared to make concessions on the "make whole" proposal. The league has wanted the players to accept part of their salaries in deferred payments through escrow. The players have stood firm against that.

It'll be interesting to see if the owners have, in fact, altered their stance.

Phantoms update. The Adirondack Phantoms dropped a 4-1 decision to visiitng Syracuse on Friday and slipped to 3-5. Phantoms goalie Cal Heeter allowed three goals on the first seven shots he faced. The fourth goal was an empty-netter.

Harry Zolnierczyk, who had an ice pack on his injured foot after the game, notched his third goal for the Phantoms.

The Phantoms went 0 for 7 on the power play.

Penn State at WFC. Tickets for the Jan. 19 hockey game between Penn State and Vermont _ billed as the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff _ went on sale Friday. They are available at 1-800-298-4200. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. game range between $10 and $33.
