Meszaros making strides for Flyers
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Defenseman Andrej Meszaros practiced with the Flyers on Tuesday for the first time since his March 21 back surgery.
Meszaros wore a no-contact jersey during drills at the Flyers' facility in Voorhees.
"I'm really encouraged," coach Peter Laviolette said.
At the time of the surgery, the Flyers said Meszaros would miss six to eight weeks.
Based on that estimate, the earliest he could return would be midway through the second round of the playoffs.
Defenseman Nick Grossmann skated before practice but did not participate in team drills. He apparently suffered a concussion in Game 4 against Pittsburgh after absorbing hits from Evgeni Malkin and Tyler Kennedy.
Next opponent. THe Flyers said they do not care who they face in the next round. A matchup with the Rangers would be their toughest challenge. The Flyers were 0-6 against New York in the regular season.
"The playoffs are totally different," defenseman Matt Carle said.
In another matter, the Flyers said they have no plans to name a captain for the rest of the playoffs.

Make sure to keep Gus in there no matter what. I still don't know why he gets taken out of the rotation. He is pretty solid in all aspects of the game. Possible pairings I would like are:
Coby and Carle
Timonen and Meszaros
Gus and Gross gatorfly65- Gus plays good 1 game out of 2 and you want to start him over Lilja? He's quietly been a force, even though he's a little slower, 4-6 blocked shots a game I think merits him the job.
j-ritch - Your point is well spoken but Guss didn't play too bad in game 5 it was the whole that prety much stunk in game 5. In my opinion which isthe other side of yoursIthought Guss has played well enought to be given the chance to play. As for Lilja he has played better than I thought he would so far in the playoffs. but right nowI think Guss will get the nod over him. that could change depending on who we are playing. anyway bottom line is who ever is playing helps us win thecup! LETS GO FLYERS!!!

Intersting to hear that Meszaros skated in drills today but Grossmann didnt. We must becareful with Grossmann and Meszaros so that when they come back they are ready to play and be in the war that is playoff hockey! I would find it hard to remove Guss from the line up right now he played so well in game 5 & 6 he should be playing.
As for a Captain being named untill we know for sure that our Captain Chris Pronger will not be back come October we should leave it alone! We have a few former Cpatains aka leaders on this team. Besides I believe the players respect prongs too much to make a move during this season and the playoffs. LETS GO FLYERS!!! srcdaddy1216- This was a really a nice post with an extra ordinary response. Keep it up and all the best for the future posts.

Naming a captain now is pointless, its good media thats all. Giroux will eventually be the captain but for now, just focus on getting ready for the next round. Fabulous
Flyers don't need to name a Captain for the rest of the Playoffs. That vacancy was filled the moment Giroux asked Lavy to be on the First Shift in game six! younged

You over rate Gus. Local press loves him, big deal. Have we not all noticeed the locals get crushes on guys? They're still doting on Bob and want to justify him getting a start in net. As for Gus, perhaps in a couple seasons his good hockey sense will combine with NHL experience and he can be an effective player, but of all the many small d-men that have good hockey sense how many have been effective and lasted in the league. I would not be shocked if he is moved in the off season to another team, as he is not a replacement for #44 even though #44 is wearing down rapidly.
There is a great opportunity for this team to make a Cup run! Let's go Flyers!!! dvldvl2001
I understand the love for Gus, but it has been 2 games. Don't discount giving Kubina a week off as well. Seeing what Gus and Lilja can do is not a bad problem to have "if" everyone is good enough to go. Gus also gives the Flyers a look into next year when Carle will be gone, and unsure how Kimmo will be. take the foot off the gas, let Lavvy make the call and enjoy the ride. Clarkeisgod
Who cares about the Captain...it's meaningless ArtieLange
Against the Bruins or Rangers, size (Grossman) would count for more than mobility (Gus). But don't ask me, since I would rather have Ed Van Impe, even today, than any of them. Please don't tell me he's dead. Hey, just put a stick in his hand and put his body in the crease.
Well, what kind of comment would you expect from a man with a son named Clark and a daughter named Barbara. I told my wife the 3rd kid is going to be Leach. I wonder why she doesn't want any more kids.

Guess which Flyer defenseman had the best plus/minus this year? How about Gustafsson, with a +12? And he did it in only 30 games. I know he's small, and he's not perfect, but he's far from the disaster that O Bartulis and R Parent were in the Cup Run of 2010. And if you saw Coburn and Lilja sitting in Bryz's lap on Malkin's goal on Sunday, or any of Carle's bone-headed giveaways in the defensive zone, you'd know that we could do a lot worse than No. 26. That's why he got 22 minutes on Sunday. rutgers81
Lilja & Kubina were both -3 in the Pittsburgh series while every other defenseman was even or better. Opposing teams are going to keep attacking these guys with their top lines and they will continue to get burned because they are too slow of foot (especially Lilja). Can't wait for Meszaros to get back to take #6 out of the lineup. sbg42- I couldn't agree with you more. Anyone with a heartbeat that watched the series saw Lilja as a complete liability. He allows shooters to shoot point blank by giving up the blueline time and again. He got some block shots b/c Pitt shot about 50-60 times a game. He's bound to get some. Gus's positioning was a close to perfect as you can get, fundamentally, against Malkin on Sunday. Kubina is bad when he's paired with someone slow (Lilja). He's better paired with Gus. Malkin's goal was all on Lilja on Sunday.
