Maroon dealt to Anaheim

POSTED: Sunday, November 21, 2010, 11:38 AM

Pat Maroon's agonizing wait in finally over.

The Flyers have sent Maroon, the player who was dismissed from the Phantoms over 3 weeks ago, to the Anaheim Ducks in a 4-player trade, the Daily News has learned.

Maroon and David Laliberte were sent to Anaheim for former Flyer Danny Syvret and 22-year-old winger Rob Bordson.

Syvret, 25, is the only one amongst the group who has seen considerable NHL action. Syvret has played 6 games for the Ducks this season, including one against the Flyers. He skated in 21 games for the Flyers last season and scored the team's only goal at the Winter Classic at Fenway Park.

"We're comfortable with Danny," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "We know him. He brings depth to our organization. He has a good relationship with [Phantoms coach] John Paddock. He'll help our power play down there. And then obviously if we have injuries, he's a guy that can come up and help."

Laliberte skated in 11 games for the Flyers last year, picking up 3 goals and 1 assist. The right winger had 9 points in 19 games this season in Adirondack.

Bordson, 22, is a rookie out of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he netted 40 points in 40 games last year in his junior season.

Maroon was the Phantoms' leading scorer through 8 games before being dismissed for what the organization termed as "behavioral issues" and "attitude problems." The Phantoms' head coach, Greg Gilbert, was fired almost 10 days after Maroon's dismissal.

Paddock, an AHL Hall of Fame Coach, has been at the helm since. The Phantoms have also added veterans Denis Hamel and Michael Ryan to the roster.

"Syvret has been around a little while," Holmgren said. "He will definitely add a veteran presence there."

Im not sure what to make of this unless it is a move to take something from the loss of Maroon, since his dismissal was netting the Flyers nothing. Was Laliberte the price it took to salvage something?

What confuses me is that two forwards were sent out for two D-men. Defense I believe was the strong suite in the Organization. With the depth at D and lack of prospects at forward, why this move? I do understand that they are trying to create a winning team with the Phantoms and career AHL level players may be used in the process... I see Syvret being brought in to play with and help the Phantoms, and imagine Bordson will have to compete with the young D prospects for possible future use by the Flyers.

This seems to be simply the backlash from the Maroon affair, as I see it.

an older, expensive defenseman or two will have to go to free up cap space, sooner or later. this simply prepares for that reality.

Agreed. The Flyers defense is aging and can't play forever. Cap space considerations also played a part in this trade. At least one expensive D-man will probably not be here next year.

For sgamble077 ... Please read what I wrote; the Organization system depth has much more defensemen prospect than forwards. They are lean on forward prospect with NHL calibre talent at this time. The Flyers have 8 NHL D-men on the roster and are arguably the best unit presently in the NHL. The 8-7 loss to TB was a bad game by the PK units and the D-men were not at their best, I admit... but the system depth cannot be judged on one game. Look at the season to-date.

As has been posted by others, they may have to move an expensive D-man in the future... but they may not. My point was that D is a system strength going forward, while forwards are not.

That said, if Bordson is a forward as has been mentioned, I understand the deal better... But still feel that it was done to get something for Maroon and Laliberte was the cost of that... and Syrvet is merely for the Phantoms to improve as an AHL team.

phila47, you'll have to excuse sgamble077 as he/she has only been watching hockey since October. Clearly, they've never seen a high scoring game before nor do they know anything about the sport.

If Patrick Kane quit hockey today, would we still have gotten the short end of the stick? I think YES!

Syvret is an AHL defenseman who keeps getting to dabble in the NHL game. He is a valuable player to have in an organization, if for no other reason than, people are always willing to trade for an offensively gifted dman. He adds skill to an AHL team, and can always be moved for a depth player for the NHL team.

The Phantoms have won a cool three games out of nineteen, dead last in the AHL. One hopes Mr. Holmgren will hold onto his first round pick and start rebuilding the farm system. It sure needs it.

The emergence and progression of both Nodl and Wellwood have made Laliberte and Maroon expendable, plus Syvret has NHL experience and doesn't cost you much salary.
