Man fined $200 for tossing banana at Simmonds

A man who hurled a banana on the ice at Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds during an exhibition game in London, Ontario, was fined $200 today, according to the Globe and Mail.

Christopher Morehouse was charged with provincial trespassing because London police said there was not enough evidence to charge Morehouse with a hate crime.

Morehouse, 26, pled guilty through his attorney, Faisal Joseph. He did not appear in court and was given 90 days to pay the fine.

Joseph has said his client did not know that throwing a banana at a black player could be seen as hateful.

Simmonds was approaching the Detroit goal during the shootout of the Sept. 22 loss. Simmonds is one of just 42 black players to play in the NHL since 1960.
