I applaud Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren for his moxie, for going out on a proverbial limb and trying to win a championship this season.

Chris Pronger, whom Holmgren acquired from Anaheim Friday, is just the type of physical defenseman the Flyers needed to become a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
But the Flyers paid too much.
The Ducks received Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, two No. 1 draft picks and a conditional third-round selection.

Sources tell me the St. Louis Blues made a late bid to acquire Pronger, and that may have caused the Flyers to "up" their offer.

Trading Lupul, a 25-goal scorer last season, was actually beneficial because his big contract ($4.25 million during each of the next four years) was weighing down the Flyers’ salary cap. And I can understand that giving the two No. 1 picks was necessary to acquire a player of Pronger’s stature.
But including Sbisa in the deal is what I don’t like.
Sbisa, 19, spent about half of last season as one of the Flyers’ regular defensemen _ and he showed poise beyond his years and was one of the team’s best skaters. The kid looks like he’ll be a star someday.
In short, this deal would look a lot more attractive if the Flyers had included one of their other defensive prospects instead of Sbisa.
That said, assuming Pronger, 34, signs an extension on his one-year contract _ all signs point to that happening _ the Flyers should battle the Penguins and Bruins for Eastern Conference supremacy in the next few years.
And maybe, just maybe, bring Philly its first Cup since 1975.
* * * * *

The Flyers continued their Great Goalie Search Saturday by selecting goaltenders Adam Morrison (third round) and Nicola Riopel (fifth round) in the NHL draft.
The raw-but-promising Morrison was taken with the club’s first pick in the draft.
For those scoring at home, the Flyers have now selected 23 goalies in the last 16 drafts. They have not had one of their drafted goalies turn into their No. 1 netminder since Ron Hextall, who was selected in the sixth round (119th overall) in the 1982 draft.
A look at the Flyers’ picks:

Adam Morrison, Goalie (6-3, 166 pounds), 18 years old _ selected in the third round (81st overall).

Comment: Had a 9-1-1 record, 2.47 GAA and .907 save percentage in 13 appearances for Saskatoon in the Western Hockey League.
Simon Bertilsson, Defenseman (6-0 185), 18 years old _ selected in the third round (87th overall).

Comment: Ranked 17th among international skaters by the Central Scouting Bureau, the hard-nosed Bertilsson is a defensive-minded defenseman who managed 31 points in 30 games in the Swedish Junior Elite League.
   Nicola Riopel, Goalie (6-0 170), 20 years old _ fitfh round (142d).

Comment: Posted a 43-15 record, 2.01 GAA and .931 save percentage in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League _ and was named the league’s MVP.

   Dave Lebrecque, Center (6-0 174), 19 years old _ sixth round (153d).

Comment: In his first full season in the QMJHL, Labrecque recorded 61 points (13 goals, 48 assists) in 59 games and was a plus-23.
   Eric Wellwood, LW (5-11 179), 19 years old _ sixth round (172d).
Comment: Playing for Windsor in the Ontario Hockey League, he had 16 goals and 18 assists in 61 regular-season games, then notched 10 goals and 11 assists in the playoffs to lead the Spitfires to the title.
   Oliver Lauridsen, D (6-6 220), 20 years old _ seventh round (196th).
Comment: The only Denmark native taken in the draft, the towering Lauridsen recorded one assist and 38 penalty minutes in 28 games as a freshman at St. Cloud State in the Western Collegiate Association.

Agreed. Holmgren gave up a King's ransom for a guy who is on the downside of his career. Anaheim gave up less to get this guy - when this guy was 4 years younger!!! Terrible deal and it will look much much worse in 5 years.

In 5 years this deal will not be a factor but the Flyers could be owning a Stanley Cup or two.

Giving up Sbisa is going to be turn out to be very, very costly - whatever happened to doing away with trading the future for the present? If you look at our record in games he played last season versus games he didn't, you'll find that we won more with him in the lineup. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

You know, you go to all the other blog pages and all you here are more passionate fans of our other teams complaining about management. At least we know have one team in town that maintains a 'win now' attitude with every transaction...and they're not afraid to spend for it. Championships are won overwhelmingly by teams who stay aggressive all the time. Sometimes they get 'lucky' by having a Tom Brady or Tony Parker fall into their laps. Sometimes they put it all together like the Red Sox or Lakers. Kudos to the Flyers for being the one team in town we never need to doubt. They don't always get it right, but their actions show us that they care as much as we do.

Sam-who will the the Flyers back up goalie this year? Are they going to re-sign Nettimaki?

The GM of the Avalanche did the same "win now" attitude when they got Ray Bourque years ago and won a cup. People here in Philly praised him and said why can't we do that? Well, they just did, the only difference is we here didn't know any of the Avalanche's players as well as we did Sbisa. This was a good move, especially in the salary cap era where, as stated, Lupul will be overpaid for the next 4 years.

Stanley Cup
explain why "all signs point to him staying long term with the Flyers"!?! it's pretty much a one year shot at the cup. if the flyers fall short, flyers blew it big time, trading their future. if (and a HUGE if) emery goes back to his ottowa cup-talent and has a cool head, and IF pronger plays like he is younger, and IF briere finally has a good injury-free season, then Homie looks like a genius. he's really put himself out on a line here

Gotta take a chance to win sometimes. We're not a team that gets 4 #1 and #2 picks in row. Pronger's attitude alone makes this deal worth it.

The Ray Bourque trade also got them Dave Andreychuk. And they paid only 1 first rounder, Brian Rolston and 2 stiffs. Flyers paid more for Pronger.

They drafted Roman Cechmanek, and he was the number one goalie for 3 years.

we did give up a lot here, but i think its a good move,if we can get a cup or two. the only thing that concerns me is that bouwmeester was had for a song. (jordan leopold and the 67h pick)wouldn;t it have been wiser to go with the 25 year old defenseman instead?

after further reading, i guess they weren't sure bouwmeester would sign.

bryan_Mc -- calgary is gambling right here. they have until wednesday to sign bouwmeester to a contract or else he becomes a free agent. what calgary gave up to the panthers was a player and a pick for exclusive negotiating rights, that's it. bouwmeester technically belongs to calgary now for a few days. it doesn't change bouwmeester's status as unrestricted free agent by july 1st. the gamble is that during these next few days they can negotiate a contract with him w/o the headache of other teams negotiating with him at the same time. there is no guarantee that he will sign a contract with calgary now, nor is there even a guarantee he will listen to any offers from calgary even though he is their property now. the fact that calgary gave up anything at all was pretty stupid; even worse than the flyers, if you can call it that. at least we have pronger for a season at least. calgay made this trade to obtain a player for three days. now if bouwmeester ends up signing with another team calgary will look like idiots b/c they woud have traded for nothing.

You know what, only time will tell if this trade was worth it, and the way to judge the trade is simply. If we win the cup with Pronger as a part of this team, then no price was too high to pay, if we don't, then giving up Sbisa was too much. Simple as that.

If you had to answer the question of whether the team that finished the season had a legitimate chance to win the Cup, you would probably say no. Replacing a defenseman in the top 6 with Sbisa does not put them over the top. Putting Pronger in the top 6, however, gives them a MUCH better chance. Therefore, its a good trade in my opinion. You have to give up quality for quality. Maybe they overpaid, but they're a better team today than they were two days ago, you can't argue that.

Might as well go for the cup now, young players will want to stay with a winning team and vets will want to come. Just look at Detroit. I think I could be one of the few flyers fans up here in Canada

They didn't draft Cechmanek. They signed him out of the Czech League as a free agent. Another one of those 'best goalies not playing in the NHL' at the time. I like the trade but it reeks of desperation. Yes, they needed a tough defenseman, but another year or two of developing this team and eventually, they would have passed the Penguins anyway. I hope it works out cause I am thirsting for a Cup. But sometimes, you need to leave well enough alone.

Hindsight will be 20/20 on this. We made this move to win NOW. The question asked is, is this our year? I'll miss Sbisa, but they'll be other good draft players along. As far as the draft picks. As good as the Flyers are without Pronger, with him I expect we won't care too much about the last couple of 1st rounders anyway.

I have the same misgivings about this trade as everyone else - especially the first rounders. In the age of the salary cap, team MUST build via the draft. Same as the NFL. However, what's done is done. I'm looking forward to seeing Pronger in a Flyers uniform and busting Crosby in the chops. I think we all know what we'll get from Pronger. Emery is the key. Holmgren's gone all in. Emery needs to be the card that puts us over the top.

Sbisa has upside, but too man Flyers fans read too much into his brief career. Look at how many young guys we already have on the team, including the blueline. You need veteran presence to win. Pittsburgh knew this.

Defensemen play for a lot longer in the league at a high level than forwards. I know he's 34 but If you look at Pronger's numbers there has been no drop off in production. I don't know where the "downside of his career" comments are coming from. The Flyers addressed 6 needs with one trade. Leadership, complacency, nastiness, offense from the point, playoff experience and cap space. I know Sbisa played very well for his age and experience level but we are talking about Chris Pronger here guys. You all screamed about Maxime Ouellet being traded for Oates. I don't think he ever cracked an NHL lineup. I do think Sbisa will have a good career but my point is that I believe that most of the fanboys here overvalue the youngsters in the system. Do you really think you will miss Lupul? This team is loaded up front. If Briere plays a full season (I know its a semi-big if) they will have a better offense than last year. While the draft picks hurt because they were in the same package, other picks can be reacquired down the road. Pronger will make every d-man in the line up better. Timonen now becomes your #2 and Coburn a #3. Not a bad #2 & #3 to have. Like Clemens did with Pettite, Coburn's growth will be expedited with Pronger on board. Then eventually Coburn will be the teacher of the next generation. Jones will be better with Pronger on board. Carle will even be better with Pronger on board. The trickle down will be felt for years. All this being said Pronger has to sign for another 3 years for this to be worth it.

the flyers need more than pronger.they need somebody to win faceoffs for this team. they also need players who can step it up in playoffs. if holmgren didn't mess up the cap sbisa wouldn't have played for flyers and showcase his talent. go flyers

Losing Luca Sbisa doesn't sting me at all. I swear, I do not understand the mentality of people who think you can get a player as valuable as Chris Pronger and not give up something of value. How does Atlanta feel after watching Braydon Coburn develop? How does Nashville feel after watching Scott Hartnell score 30 goals? Teams lose valuable assets every season, and they move on. That's because the goal is not to do what the Penguins dis to form the core of their team: Lose, lose, lose, lose, then all of sudden, pretend like you're the greatest franchise ever. The goal is to win the freaking Stanley Cup -- and THAT'S what the Flyers are trying to do! Chris Pronger is now the best freaking defenseman this team has, now and maybe EVER. And people want to complain about it? Wow.

At first, I thought this was a bad trade. After having some time to cool off and really examine the situation, this could indeed be a very good trade. First, Pronger is NOT old by NHL standards. Defensemen play well into their late 30's early 40's, examples: Lindstrom, Chelios, Bourque, Stevens, etc. His game has not deteriorated as witnessed by his 12 goals/27 assists last year which is better than ANY current Flyer's defenseman. Second, he is a veteran and a winner, and should be a huge influence on a young team much the same as Hatch was. Third, he is the physical presence the Flyers could have used in the playoffs. Forwards will not be camping out in front of the goalie with him around. Fourth, everyone is assuming that Sbisa is the next Bobby Orr. Why? Potential does not necessarily translate to greatness (e.g. Lindros). He could have an injury or never live up to expectations. Fifth, the Flyers farm system is not like the Phillies, they actually have some defensemen who should be ready in a year or two. Finally, I applaud Mike's "Win Now" attitude, with addition of Pronger, the Flyers have as much talent as any team in the league and he may have been the final piece that puts us over the top. Go Flyers.

The Flames will get a draft pick or two for Bouwmeester if/when he signs with another team. So they wouldn't have given up a lot for nothing assuming he doesn't sign, which he probably won't with Calgary's salary cap issues. They have something like 37 million spent on like 6 players. However, I hate losing Sbisa, not to mention all the draft picks. I know that the Flyers picks are usually late first rounders, but still. If the Flyers win the cup this year, then this trade will be forgiven. If not, maybe they can send Homer to Houston to join Ed Wade. Maybe the Houston Aeros need a gm..

how is losing an undersized d-man who may or may not end up being a star, and 2 draft picks who may never play a game in the nhl "trading away the future"? get a grip people. if there's one thing this team is not lacking, it's solid young talent. seems everyone wants to win a cup in 3 years. F that. i want to win THIS year. it's good to see holmgren agrees.

mrkmcc you dont get a guy like pronger cheap but if he does not sign an extension and walks at seasons end this deal becomes a disaster. holmgrens win now approach looks a lot better if he had went out and actually upgraded the goalie situation instead of signing a reclamation project in ray emery. the one thing flyers management has done for years and it drives me nuts is that they spare no expense on every position but one....goalie.

Is there something missing here? Have you noticed how many young players we trated the last few years and have come back to haunt us? Jason Williams, Eaton, the Russian kid with the Pens and a couple others. My personal feeling is that lousy system they continually use year after year too restrictive on offens. Dump the puck in nobody chases it.Why can they do like other good teams do go right down the middle, their always taking their selves out of the play by getting smashed against the boards and their defense on penalty kills never covering the points.

I like this trade. At least the Flyers are showing every team that they are here for right now and not the future. Yet, they will be here for a long time baby! Lups is a coke head, and Sbisa is a rookie. Hey, he could be a 1 year wonder, who only played what 30 games at the pro level? As far as the 2 first rounders. Well, when this years was a 20th and next years will potentially be a 25th to 30th. I like that too. Way to go Homer !!

It was costly, but I love a team that wants to win a championship. They have a lot of young talent on the team and can afford to take this chance on Pronger. I think the Penguins will be a little more hesitant hanging around the net next season.

Core players are in place now. Waiting for first round picks to pan out (if ever) does not help us win in our prime. Yes it hurts to lose Spisa but he wont be a game changer for years to come, when the organization feels theres a chance to win now we cant wait for that. Our team is very young as it is. Our own captain is what 23 or 24? You pay a high price for a future hall of famer and top defensemen in league history, Holmer was willing to pay it.
