Laperriere expected to miss season

POSTED: Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 2:41 PM

Flyers forward Ian Laperriere is expected to miss the entire season and his career could be in jeopardy, the Daily News has learned.

Technically, Laperriere has been placed on the short-term injury list with post-concussion syndrome, but doctors are trying to determine whether his symptoms are from concussions or from the eye injury that he suffered in the first round against the Devils last year.

Because Laperriere is older than 35, his status has salary cap implications for the Flyers that the team is still evaluating.

Andreas Nodl was sent down to the AHL Adirondack Phantoms, but the move was procedural. He will be recalled in time for tomorrow's season opener at Pittsburgh and traveled with the Flyers.

One of my favorite players of all-time. I was so excited when the Flyers picked him up. I hope he is fine and can get back on the ice soon!

This city has to deal with more problems with concussions: kolb, westbrook, lappy just off the top of my head. He's a great player I hope he does whatever is better for his health

Letting Asham walk looking worse and worse. Lappy, you're still one tough MF, even in retirement. Cue the standing O.

Hire him as a coach and move on. He is a great guy.

Sadly, I think his career is over. Lappy was a warrior and an old school hockey player that brought grit and energy to this team. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I hope he can get healthy and move on with no regrets. He wasn't here long but he's a true Flyer through and through.

Unfortunately, there is no hall of fame for what Ian brings to the table. If there was he'd be first ballot.

mjc1, there are many reasons why I don't think these guys should be wearing cages, but outside of that, a cage wouldn't have kept him from having head trauma. Sure, it would have kept him from requiring the stitches, but a point blank slap shot to the head would have caused a concussion either way.

I am so sorry to hear that about Lappy. That guy is a warrior. I wish he would have joined Flyers 5 years earlier.

it sucks to see him out but at the same time im angry at him for not taking head injuries seriously and hiding things during the playoffs, its really sad that its come to this, i know he put the team first but this is his life were talking about, you cant take that lightly

Hopefully he does the REAL tough thing and leaves the game he loves for the people he loves before it's too late. Lappy, we loved you here, but we fans and a game aren't worth your mental faculties and quality of your remaining 40-50 years. Sometimes being really tough means knowing when to walk away for your family and your health.

Good luck, #14. Would love to see you come back but life is hopefully a little longer than a hockey player's career. Hopefully he will do what is proper for his health and life maintenance. I was at the game early last year when he got pucked the first time, and it was not pretty.

Time to retire. What a shame. I really liked him. But it is what it is, and it isn't good.

usually I ignore the trolls, you know who you are, but this is to far. Lappy is a class guy who is seriously injured. It has less to do with hockey, sports or the Flyers than a serious injury to an awesome guy. Shame on you big tom and the rest of your messed up alter egos

Why couldn't Carcillo take a puck in the head and be forced to retire?

I hope this isn't the end for him but if it is, he will be missed. In his short tenure as a Flyer, he quickly became a fan favorite and played with all heart. Best wishes Lappy!

Unquestionably had more heart than anyone to wear the orange & black in a long, long time. I'll never forget his first game back after having to wear the face shield, with the Flyers down and trying to inspire his team, he offered to take the shield off and fight an opposing player. Fighters are a dime a dozen, but Lappy was much more of a leader and warrior than a fighter. In my opinion, he is irreplaceable.

Big Tom Blew 3 is an embarrassment... even to Boston fans!!! What a loser. Lappy is the consummate teammate. Wish we had more players in the league like him... and I wish we had one in Boston!! Maybe we wouldn't have choked last year!

Agree winnipegflyers; A dedicated player, and fan favorite. He should be offered a position with the organization . Snider does run a good program and it's my guess Lappy will be offered something with the team.

Always loved the way this guy played. I was pumped about him coming to Philly. Can't think of another guy ever who played like he did. Flyers should offer him a job for life since he risked his.

Why is hockey the only sport where the kids have better equipment than the pros? These guys are really tough, no doubt about it, but why do this to yourself? If he has a good helmet and a cage, he's still playing and not talking about eye and brain injuries.

Well according to what I'm reading, if the headaches are NOT post concussion syndrone and simply? caused by the issues with the eye, there might be a simpler cure. Either way I hope they figure it out soon. And selfishly, I hope he comes back..if even just for 1 game. That way he gets his name on the cup.

His health is most important, if he needs to take a season off or even retire then that is what he shold do, no doubts there! Us fans will miss him very much but the team will miss him even more, they don't have anyone in the organization who can fill those skates! God bless u Lappy, get well!

Can we all agree now that blocking slap shots, point-blank with your unmasked face is not the way to go, no matter how "tough" it is?
