Jagr signs with Dallas
While Zach Parise is busy making up his mind, the market for scoring right wingers is shrinking. Jaromir Jagr was tired of waiting for the dominoes to fall.
Jagr is moving to the Western Conference for the first time in his illustrious, Hall of Fame career.
Jagr, 40, reportedly signed a one-year deal worth $4.55 million with the Dallas Stars. If reports are correct, Jagr will play alongside fellow 40-year-old Ray Whitney, who signed with the Stars this week.
Jagr made $3.3 million with the Flyers last season.
Surprisingly, Jagr leaves Philadelphia after just one season with Claude Giroux, where he collected 54 points in 73 games. After losing to New Jersey in the second round, Jagr called it one of the most enjoyable seasons of his career.
"I feel lucky to have had the chance to play with him," Giroux told the Daily News. "He came in and right away tried to help out everybody on the team."
The Flyers were prevented from re-signing Jagr before the July 1 free agency period opened because of tagging space restrictions. They were either unable to re-sign him now because of one of three reasons: (1) Peter Laviolette wasn't willing to guarantee him a specific top-line role next season with special teams time; (2) they weren't willing to give him a $1.25 million raise; or (3) they are still knee-deep in the possibility of signing Parise.
Jagr is 8th on the NHL's all-time points list, just 70 behind former Penguins teammate Mario Lemieux. His $1.25 million raise will push his career earnings to just south of $106 million.
Jagr was noticeably slower in the playoffs and suffered from a recurring groin injury throughout the season. He vowed to be stronger for next season. Now, he’ll be stronger in Dallas - with a more strenuous travel schedule. Jagr has spent his entire NHL career thus far with Pittsburgh, Washington, New York and Philadelphia.
Jagr was one of the Flyers' "Plan B" fallback options if they do not sign Parise. It may be time to start looking at their other "Plan B" in defenseman Matt Carle, should they not be able to bring in Nashville free agent Ryan Suter. If the Flyers do not sign any one of those 3 players, they will be forced to look at the trade market to fill their holes at right wing and on the blue line.

For Jagr, it's often about the money. You can tell by how many times he says "it's not about the money."
I mean, do you think he came to Philly last year because he thought Philly had a better chance of winning the Cup than the Pens. The Flyers NEVER WIN A CUP AND NEVER WILL.
He came to Philly because of the money, and he went to Dallas because of the money.
He gambled most of his wealthy away. Sad to say, he needs it. WhatWhiners
OK so I have to go back to hating Jagr?? seeker58- No. We'll only see him once, on Oct. 30th, after the Stars have played the Bruins and Blues in previous games. So chances are 50-50 he'll already be out with a groin injury by then. icarus
Thank god. He can do his Copperfield in Dallas. EDDYEDEAGLES
I'll miss him.. Was fun watching him. At least I was able to get some photos of him in the orange and black at some of the games. I hope the young guys remember his work ethic. I think one of the reasons he left is that there's no guarantee he'll be on G's line again. Good luck Jags. Cali7
I HATED Jagr when I was in High School and he was on the Pens but always respected his talent. I think the Flyers were smart by signing him for the 1 year that they did. As was said by others, his work ethic and experience will be handed down to future leaders of the team. There are a lot of NHL players with great skills, but few that can LEAD BY EXAMPLE (skating until midnight etc...) and pass on to young players the intangibles that Jagr can, just by doing what he does.
I appreciate the time he spent in Orange and Black and he'll always be a Flyer in my book. Thanks for a great season Jagr, I hope some day the Flyers retire #68. elmersmithsucks
thx #68 for your time with flyers.. i njoyed it and hope u did as well.. good luck in dallas.. i only hope his exit wont really have any bad effect on youngsters in out team, coz he defo helped a lot.. i take it as a lose for flyers that he's gone.. eirefly
Homer, if you're reading this, withdraw from the FA sweeps. Suter disrespected the black & orange and Parise has no intention of playing here. Start working the phones for Doan or Ryan, and please do not include Couturier in any deal. Danno
Jagr is from Eastern Europe....he'd move 3,000 miles to play for $1000 more than the Flyers would pay him...as the Russian Hockey Player Mantra states: One Ruble more...if you want me, pay one Ruble more... Apollotwo
He wanted nothing to do with Bryzaster attila
$$$$$$$$ auspitz.paul
He was nothing but a Eastern European carpetbagger. when you have to spend 4.5 mil. on a 40 yearold something is wrong for that money you can get 20 goals somewhere on the scrapheap. angrywhtguy
Get Carle and Voracek signed ... then look to see what Anaheim wants back for Ryan. If it's a winger, dman and picks as reported, then offer up Read, Meszaros and a pick(s), and get this done. Weber is the guy you really want, and he'd be perfect to fill the hole next year when Timonnen is done. iggles23- Would have liked to have kept Jagr, but from a business perspective not at the money he could get elsewhere. He was clearly spent by the end of last year, be it because of injury or age. As we have learned with the Phillies, age gets to even the best players eventually, and you can't expect people to get better after 30 or 35, only worse. Flyers definately need better defensemen if we hope Bryz will have a strong year... JohnFC
work hard, work hard, muck, muck, muck...also, a quote from Ed Snider: "I want to win now..." This organiiiiiiiiization will never win while he is in charge. lanzascat
