James van Riemsdyk will not be on the ice in Nashville tonight when the Flyers take on the Predators.

In fact, van Riemsdyk won't be on the ice at all for a while.

On Saturday, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released a statement saying that JVR will be out indefinitely with a concussion.

According to Holmgren, Van Riemsdyk first reported not feeling like himself yesterday. Holmgren said JVR was hit in the head in each of the last two games.

Van Riemsdyk, 22, is the fourth Flyer to be diagnosed with a concussion this season, joining Chris Pronger, Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn.

This is also the latest in a series of injuries this season for Van Riemsdyk, including a muscular tear in his abdominal region, a chronic hip injury that could require surgery in the offseason and a brief knee problem.

Van Riemsdyk's name swirled in trade rumors this week, but it's safe to say that he's not going anywhere for a while now.

He's put together a disappointing season, with 11 goals and 11 assists in 37 games, after signing a 6-year, $25.5 million deal last summer.

Zac Rinaldo will likely replace JVR in the lineup. Both Rinaldo and Jody Shelley have been healthy scratches in each of the last two games.

Van Rimesdyk has remained with the team in Nashville and will return to Philly with the Flyers late tonight.

Could this be the hit the concussed van Riemsdyk? It took place last Saturday against the Ottawa Senators. Although the announcers suggest that JVR was taking a dive on this hit by Bobby Butler, he certainly looks shaken up.

While all of us are shaking our heads regarding JVR, the reality is he has been playing injured for a good portion of the year.

Numbers alone would put him at 25 goals and 25 assist over an 82 game schedule which would be progressive and very similar to Hartnells average numbers.

The disappointment is the high expectations. The kid has had a tough year- just like Schenn. Everyone wants to trade either or with no patience.

The Flyers are 5th in the league. There are 12 forwards and JVR is one of them. He has played injured most of the year and never said iota about it until Holmgren acklowledged it- and even then, not a word of complaint from his lips.

The worse part of this is that that that JVR-Schenn-Simmonds line were becoming huge.

Regardless of trade rumors dreamed up by fat Frank..........the NHL better start listening to it's former players on head injury prevention. The league and the sport cannot afford continual attrition involving it's better players. The depth of each squad is suspect to begin with and I am not going to fork out $90/seat per game to watch AHLers..........

Wasn't Couturier also out with a concussion this year?

Anyway, JVR has another injury so sitting out is not the worst thing for him. Hopefully he can address his lower body injury at the same time.

What is with you losers and your personal attacks on everyone who doesn't look like you? Fat Andy. Fat Frank. Since when does a person's weight or skin color or sexual orientation or religion or anything else you miserable lowlifes pick on have to do with their ability to do their job? You people truly are the worst of what Philly has to offer. Just like those morons attacking the Ranger fans in front of Geno's.

If this kid has muscular tears or hip issues, get the surgery now. Take the time off to deal with the concussion properly. If it costs him 8-10 weeks, so be it. Need him at 100% for the playoffs, not at 60% for a January game against Nashville.

It isn't such a disappointing year if you didn't come in expecting JVR to be the player that he was for the 11-game playoff stretch, and if you understood that the playoffs were a small sample size that would be difficult to reproduce over an entire season. If you just wanted to see JVR continue in his progression, you've been relatively happy with his performance, especially considering all of his injuries. We all knew when he was drafted that it was going to take a few years to see JVR achieve his potential. I still think he can be a 35-goal/season guy, and he's just about where I expected him to be when they drafted him.
