Hartnell: Hard to see Gagne go

POSTED: Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 3:32 PM

Dealing with the recent trade of Simon Gagne to Tampa Bay will be an adjustment for all the Flyers.

Because Gagne was the longest tenured player on the team, none of his teammates know what life as a Flyer is like without him.

“It was hard to see him go," Scott Hartnell said today at a clinic for the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. "He’s been here for so long. He’s done a lot for the city. Gags put the puck in the net and everything else. But it is part of the business with the salary cap issues. I know if we could have squeezed him in, I’m sure Homer (Paul Holmgren) would have done it. It will be weird seeing him in a Tampa Bay uniform next year. It won’t be fun playing against him. Pucks will be in the corner and he and I will be going after it and hopefully I will be able to come up with it instead of him.”

The loss of Gagne is not the only change. The Flyers have actively collected defenseman this offseason.

"What our defense did for us last year in taking us to the [Stanley Cup] final, to add a couple more guys in that department is very good," Hartnell said. "There is nothing wrong with having too many defensemen. It will be interesting to see what happens and who is in the line-up. But it will make for a good training camp and will make it very competitive out there. It should be fun.”

Hartnell took part in on-ice demontrations and drills with children at the Skate Zone in Northeast Philadelphia.

"These kids love to play hockey," Hartnell said. "Twenty years ago this would have been me out there in these summer camps having fun. It is just a great feeling being able to give something back.”

And for you (me included) UNPAID ARM CHAIR GM's! Bashing Homer for beefing up a defense, is ludicrous!!! Why?? ummm, lets look at our coach's system... if you're smart.. you might want to re-think your argument. IMHO, Homer was pretty smart in in collecting a defense that's arguably, the best in the league...

bboy - let the girls bicker amongst themselves... What all of us say, is irrelevant. We can't change what the front office has done; or will do. Gags will be missed for sure, even injured he put up numbers that full season "pros" couldn't. You think you can change the roster by posting on a newspaper comment forum?? guess again.... Lavi lit a fire under Hartnell's derriere. It's simple. Look at his stats AFTER it was reported that he and Harts had a "Spat". He has a perm spot on the roster no matter what any one of us say. Face it, his salary says he will no matter how many times he falls in training camp. I'm not condoning his on or off ice antics or lifestyle - "wisdom comes from a drunk" comment comes from someone named twinkle toes?? LOL - That's the mentality we're all dealing with here!! Get real,, the man was going thru a divorce. Let's see any one of you do that and it not effect your work in some form. Don't be so self righteous... His contract is long and again, unavoidable. Gags?? the guy is not dumb, he knows the front office is set in their ways. Carter is a "teacher's pet" (remember the phantoms calder cup???) and won't move him. Gags had enough class to understand that and be traded.. While Carter, whines about being moved to a different position and still not be productive when it counts.. Oh, and please feel free to retaliate with the fact he was injured,, not unlike gags was when he scored the over time goal that Carter couldn't do even when he was healthy in the regular season...

Sticking to the original question, it's super hard to see gagne go. He always showed guts and class and I can't imagine the team without him. BTW cduran and ingy - STOP it already.

Hartnell had a weak season and was even weaker on his skates! If the Flyers didn't have that run and Hartnell didn't get his game together he wouldn't be getting the mulligan from flyer fans! Making it to the NHL is as hard as it seemed to watch Hartnell in the corners last year. We will see if he brings his A game in October!

Hartnell played great in the Finals on the line with Briere and Leino. They were the only line they had going in game 6.

God I can't believe I read through those posts. Hartnell blew this season, he should be traded for a bag of those nice orange hoodies - PERIOD - Ingy, seriously stop. Duran, let it go. Gags stinks as well. Go away. Thank you

Hard to see Gagne go. Truer words were never spoken. Now watch Gags lead the Tampa Bay resurgence...Homer should be reprimanded for extremely poor cap management and for being taken to school by a rookie GM.

Hartnell was awesome in the playoffs, not so good during the year. Same could be said for Danny B. Lets hope they both play great all this coming season. Gagne being traded was nothing but a salary dump but it had to be made. I hate to see him go but what were the other options. Saying that I love the look of our team this year but still scratching my head over the Shelley signing.....hmmmmm time will tell.

wolfpack . . The NHL IS the best league in the world . . don't you watch hockey ? Since it is the best league . . . it Has the best players . . in the world . . in that league . . so when some of the best players in the world . . hit you . . you / I or scott hartnell . . will go down . . . AND since hartnell's game is a lot of ' mucking and grinding ' in the corners and in front of the net . . he seems or actually goes down more . . . funny how when hartnell scored 30 . . goals 2 years ago for the flyers . . no one complained about him going down . . and if he goes down and a shot goes off his a** . . i'm sure no one would complain about that . . an that might have been the only way he could have scored alot last year : )

Ingy - just because you wiped the ice off the blades of NHL players doesnt mean you played in the NHL. And cduran was right. Hartnell was paid too much to fall down in the regular season. If we didnt make it to the playoffs, you'd be singing a different tune about Hartnell.

cduran--theres no apology needed. The guy just wants to rib ya. Any Flyer fan knows Hartnell was a joke most of the season. He did play better in the playoffs as it went on. Hopefully he carries it over cuz they do need him big time this year.

ingy - when he says hartnell spent way too much time on his back last year, he's comparing him to his peers in the nhl, not the rest of the world. I'm sure if he was playing pee wee hockey (or against you), he would've only fallen down about 1/3 of the time.

I would have prefered trading Hartnell instead of Gagne. But I understand why Homer made the move (although I am not sure I understand what he got in return). If Hartnell has another lousy regular season (14 goals is NOT acceptable) he should be traded.

I'll answer the question, yes it was tough to see Gagne go, he was a class act and a great Flyer !!! Hope he stays healthy for the balance of his career, hope they hang #12 in the rafters some day, a fresh faced kid at 18 years of age when he hit the ice for the first time and played hard his whole career here in Philly, good luck Simon !!!

hartnell makes the 2011 all star team and competes in the fastest skater competition, wins it, then leads the league in scoring before winning the conn symthe trophy for being the best forward in the playoffs, ever. he finishes his career win san jose in 2019 before coaching the flyers to back to back stanley cups in 2027 - 28. two banners hangs from the rafters at the snyder arena for his achievements as a player and coach. he goes down in history as the most prolific flyer in history.

Homer should have traded for Cliff Lee. He could have played center and both wings simultaneously and filled in as a clear-the-crease D-man. He also could have replaced Brian Westbrook, Sonny Jorgenson, Greg Luzinski and World B. Free, and rebuilt the Civic Center and JFK stadium with nothing but a spork from Taco Bell.
